Kidney Disease - Overview
Kidney disease results in improper and impaired function of the kidneys. The kidneys work by filtering wastes and unwanted fluids from the blood which is then discharged through urine. Over time, kidney function can deteriorate significantly leading to a more serious condition called chronic kidney disease.
Causes Of Kidney Disease
Hypertension and diabetes are two most common causes of kidney disease with others being genetic disorders, membranous nephropathy, kidney stones and immune system diseases.
Symptoms Of Kidney Disease
Early stage of a kidney disease may not have any significant symptoms and often cannot be detected until the disease has progressed to a more serious condition. Specific blood and urine tests are carried out to confirm an existing kidney condition.
Some of the most common symptoms include:
- Feeling fatigued
- Trouble concentrating
- Loss of appetite
- Difficulty in falling asleep
- Experiencing muscle cramps at night time
- Swollen feet and ankles
- Visible puffiness around the eyes especially after waking up
- Dry and itchy skin
- Urge to urinate frequently, mostly at night
- Pain in the back (under lower ribs, where kidneys are located)
Medicine For Kidney Disease
Treatment includes arresting the progression of kidney damage, usually by treating the cause. There are a range of medicines for kidney stones are available to treat the condition.
Commonly prescribed solutions for kidney stones:
- ACE inhibitors and ARB blockers to control blood pressure: Lisinopril & Losartan
- Diuretics for eliminating excess fluids: Hydrochlorothiazide & Furosemide
- Phosphate binders: Calcium acetate & Sevelamer
- Using sound waves for breaking stones or surgical removal of stones
Doctors may prescribe syrup for kidney stone for children and infant who have difficulty swallowing tablets. Additionally, your doctor may recommend for your child to drink more fluids to help prevent new kidney stones from forming. For adults, the urologists can advise diuretics like a tablet for kidney stone to successfully dissolve kidney stones. The medicines must be supplemented with healthy wholefood diet. Moreover, injection for kidney stones often include pain relievers to reduce inflammation. For more serious conditions, regular dialysis may be required to upkeep body functions and a kidney transplant may be recommended.
