Iron is an essential nutrient that the body requires to produce red blood cells, which play a crucial role in transporting oxygen throughout the body. Lack of iron leads to anaemia which causes lower level of red blood cells. Fatigue is one of the most common symptoms reported by patients suffering from anaemia. A blood test to measure haemoglobin and the red cells can be used to diagnose anaemia.
Types Of Iron Supplement/Anaemia
Iron supplements are often recommended to treat anaemia. The treatment can vary depending on the cause of anaemia. A doctor may recommend iron boosting supplements in addition to eating iron-rich foods.
- Oral Supplements: These are often available in form of iron tablets, liquid, or salt. Types of formulations include ferrous sulphate, ferrous gluconate, ferric citrate, and ferric sulphate.
- Intravenous Supplements: In a condition where the body is not able to absorb iron from food or from oral medication or if immediate increase in iron levels in required, supplements can be administered. intravenously. Formulations include iron dextran, iron sucrose and ferric gluconate.
Medicine For Iron Supplement/Anaemia
Upon diagnosing anaemia, the doctor determines the suitable dosage of iron supplements. Certain foods such as dairy, eggs, spinach, whole grains, and caffeine can interfere with the body’s capability to absorb iron. Antacid and calcium medications should also be avoided for at least an hour prior taking these supplements. In case of an iron deficiency anaemia, a much higher dose of supplements is prescribed than the usual daily allowance.
