Introduction About SAZO 500MG TABLET

SAZO 500MG TABLET contains Sulfasalazine which belongs to the group of medicines called Aminosalicylates. It is used to manage inflammatory bowel disease such as Ulcerative Colitis, Crohn’s disease and rheumatoid arthritis.

Ulcerative Colitis is an inflammatory disease which affects only the large bowel (colon and back passage), the lining of the bowel becomes inflamed (red and swollen) and symptoms include abdominal pain and diarrhea (may have blood and mucus).

Crohn’s disease is an inflammatory disease which affect any part of the digestive system from the mouth to the anus, most commonly affects the last part of the small bowel and the first part of the large bowel, symptoms include abdominal pain and diarrhea (may be bloody). It can also be used to manage rheumatoid arthritis (swelling, pain, stiffness of joints)

Your doctor might want you to take certain blood, kidney and liver function tests during the management. Drink enough fluids during this management to avoid problems with kidney.

Before taking SAZO 500MG TABLET inform your doctor if you have porphyria (a rare blood pigment disorder), jaundice, kidney, liver, blood problems, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, history of recurring chronic infection, asthma, arthritis.

Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. SAZO 500MG TABLET is not recommended for use in children below 2 years of age.

The most common side effects of taking SAZO 500MG TABLET are indigestion, heartburn, nausea, dizziness and headache. Consult your doctor if side effects gets worse.

It is used to manage:

  • ulcerative colitis
  • crohn’s disease
  • rheumatoid arthritis

How SAZO 500MG TABLET Works

SAZO 500MG TABLET works by suppressing the overactivity of the immune system in autoimmune diseases and blocks the chemical messengers that cause inflammation (swelling).

How to use SAZO 500MG TABLET

Take SAZO 500MG TABLET as advised by your physician. Swallow the medicine with water. Do not crush or chew the medicine. Your doctor will decide the right dose and duration depending upon your age, body weight and disease condition.

Side Effects Of SAZO 500MG TABLET

Common

  • indigestion

Rare

Stop taking SAZO 500MG TABLET and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:

  • allergic reaction such as sudden wheeziness, difficulty in breathing, swelling of eyelids, face or lips, rash or itching (affecting the whole body)
  • jaundice
  • severe skin rash that causes blistering (affects the mouth and tongue), life-threatening skin rashes (exfoliate dermatitis, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis)
  • fever, pains in your joints, hives, swollen glands, rash and itching (signs of serum sickness)
  • any unexplained bleeding
  • bruising, fever, rash, pallor (paleness), severe sore throat or tiredness (signs of abnormality in blood)
  • rash or fever or swollen gland may be a sign of DRESS (drug rash with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms)

How To Manage Side Effects

Nausea:

Stick to simple meals. Avoid eating oily or spicy food. Inform your doctor if symptoms do not reduce.

Headache:

Avoid bright lights, drink lots of water and take rest. Inform your doctor if symptoms do not reduce.

Cough:

Drink more of warm water, take honey, ginger for relief. Taking steam also helps. Inform your doctor if symptoms do not reduce.

Indigestion:

Eat smaller meals, chew the food thoroughly. drink lemon or ginger tea. Inform your doctor if symptoms do not reduce.

Pregnancy

Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to have a baby before taking SAZO 500MG TABLET. Your doctor will decide whether to take it or not.

Breastfeeding

Avoid breastfeeding while taking SAZO 500MG TABLET as there have been reports of diarrhea or blood in the stools of babies. Consult your doctor before taking it.

Driving and Using Machines

SAZO 500MG TABLET is unlikely to affect your ability to drive or use machines.

Kidney

SAZO 500MG TABLET should be used with caution in patients with kidney disease. Consult your doctor before taking.

Liver

SAZO 500MG TABLET should be used with caution in patients with liver disease. Consult your doctor before taking.

Allergy

Do not take SAZO 500MG TABLET if you are allergic to Sulfasalazine, salicylates (Ex. aspirin) or sulfonamides (type of antibiotic) or any other ingredients of this medicine.

Lungs

SAZO 500MG TABLET should be used with caution in patients with asthma. Consult your doctor before taking.

Others

SAZO 500MG TABLET is not recommended for use if you:

  • have porphyria (a rare blood pigment disorder)
  • have jaundice

Before taking SAZO 500MG TABLET, inform your doctor if you:

  • have blood disorders
  • have glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency (an inherited condition)
  • have a history of recurring chronic infections

Interactions

A. Drug-Drug interactions:

Before taking SAZO 500MG TABLET, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicine:

  • medicine for high blood sugar (Ex. metformin, glipizide)
  • digoxin (to manage heart failure)
  • folic acid or folate (Ex. Spina Bifida) to reduce risk of neural tube defect
  • azathioprine and mercaptopurine (help to suppress your body’s immune response in organ transplantation and certain chronic inflammations (Ex. rheumatoid arthritis))
  • methotrexate (used to manage rheumatoid arthritis)
  • methenamine (for managing urinary tract infections)

Overdosage:

If you or anyone else accidentally takes too much of SAZO 500MG TABLET, consult your doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital. Symptoms of overdose are nausea and vomiting.
