Introduction About REGLAN INJECTION

REGLAN INJECTION contains Metoclopramide which belongs to the group of medicines called Anti-emetics. It provides relief from sensations of nausea and vomiting associated with various conditions like chemotherapy, surgeries, radiotherapy, migraine, etc.

Your doctor may perform blood tests during management with REGLAN INJECTION to monitor your blood pigment (haemoglobin) levels. Your doctor may immediately or permanently stop your management if there are any abnormalities in the levels of blood pigment.

Before receiving REGLAN INJECTION, inform your doctor if you are having liver, kidney or heart diseases, porphyria (rare blood disorder), brain problems and also if you are using any other medicines that may affect your heartbeat.

REGLAN INJECTION is not recommended for use in patients with epilepsy, parkinson’s disease, bleeding, obstruction or tear in stomach or gut, tumour of adrenal gland (pheochromocytoma) and involuntary muscle spasms or if you are taking a medicine used to manage parkinson’s diseases (levodopa).

REGLAN INJECTION is not recommend for use during the first 3 months of pregnancy and it should be used with caution during pregnancy only if clearly advised by the doctor. It is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women as it may pass through the breast milk.

REGLAN INJECTION is not recommended for use in children (below 1 year of age) and should be cautiously used among elderly patients, hence consult your doctor before receiving it. The most common side effects of receiving REGLAN INJECTION are drowsiness, uncontrollable body movements, diarrhoea, restlessness and feeling weak. Inform your physician immediately if any of the side effect worsens.

How REGLAN INJECTION Works

REGLAN INJECTION acts and supresses certain centres called dopamine (brain chemical) centres by decreasing the sensitivity of the nerves that transmit signals from gastrointestinal tract to the vomiting centres in the brain. It also relaxes the muscles of stomach and enhances the motility of gut and manages nausea and vomiting.

How to use REGLAN INJECTION

REGLAN INJECTION will be given to you only by a doctor or a nurse into a vein as a slow injection (at least 3 minutes) or can be given as an injection into the muscle (intramuscularly). Your doctor will determine the correct dose and duration for you depending upon your age, body weight and disease condition.

How To Manage Side Effects

Diarrhea

Drink lot of fluids such as water or fruit juice to keep yourself hydrated. Avoid eating high-fat or spicy foods. Inform your doctor if the symptom does not improve.

Tiredness

Drink plenty of fluids and eat a balanced diet and frequent meals. Follow a regular sleep schedule. Inform your doctor if the symptom does not improve.

Do not drive or operate any machines if you feel dizzy, drowsy or have uncontrollable twitching, jerking or writhing movements, unusual muscle tone leading to distortion of the body or vision problems after receiving REGLAN INJECTION.  

Alcohol

Avoid consumption of alcohol while receiving REGLAN INJECTION because it may increase the sedative effects.

Kidney

Use with Caution

REGLAN INJECTION should be used with caution in patients having kidney problems. Your doctor may reduce the dose in patients with moderate or severe kidney problems. Consult with your doctor before receiving REGLAN INJECTION.

Liver

Use with Caution

REGLAN INJECTION should be used with caution in patients having liver problems. Your doctor may reduce the dose in patients with severe liver problems. Consult with your doctor before receiving REGLAN INJECTION.

Allergy

Tell your doctor before receiving REGLAN INJECTION if you are allergic to Metoclopramide or any of its constituents.

Heart Disease

REGLAN INJECTION should be used with caution in patients having heart diseases such as history of abnormal heartbeat (QT interval prolongation) or any other heart problems. Consult with your doctor before receiving REGLAN INJECTION.

Use In Pediatrics

REGLAN INJECTION is not recommended for use in children (below 1 year of age) because of the increased risk of uncontrollable movements. It should be used with caution in children and adolescents aged between (1 to 18 years of age). Your child’s doctor may adjust the dose depending upon child’s age and body weight. Consult your child’s doctor for advice.

Interactions

A. Drug-Drug interactions:

Before receiving REGLAN INJECTION, inform your doctor if you have received or taking any of the following medicines:

• Anti-parkinsonian agents (Ex. levodopa, carbidopa)
• anticholinergics (medicines used to manage stomach cramps and spasms) Ex. dicyclomine, hyoscyamine
• morphine derivatives (medicine used to manage severe pain) Ex. oxycodone, oxymorphone
• sedative medicines (used to manage sleeping disorders, anxiety, panic attacks) Ex. diazepam, lorazepam
• Antidepressants and Antipsychotics (Ex. quetiapine, risperidone, fluoxetine and paroxetine, chlorpromazine)
• medicine used to manage heart failure (Ex. digoxin)
• ciclosporin (used to manage immune problems)
• mivacurium and suxamethonium (medicines used to relax the muscles)
• atovaquone (used to manage pneumonia)
• medicines used to manage pain (Ex. aspirin, paracetamol)

Overdosage:

REGLAN INJECTION will be given to you only by a doctor or nurse in a hospital, and so it is unlikely to receive an overdose. However, inform your doctor if you experience any unusual symptoms such as uncontrollable movements, feeling drowsy, reduced level of consciousness, confusion, hallucinations and cardio-respiratory arrest (loss of function of heart and breathing).
