Uses of Metoclopramide

Metoclopramide is used to prevent nausea and vomiting which may occur after chemotherapy or radiotherapy. It can also be used to treat nausea and vomiting which occurs because of migraine.

How Metoclopramide works

Metoclopramide acts and supresses certain centres called dopamine (brain chemical) centres by decreasing the sensitivity of the nerves that transmit signals from gastrointestinal tract to the vomiting centres in the brain. It also relaxes the muscles of stomach and enhances the motility of gut and prevents nausea and vomiting.

Common side effects of Metoclopramide

  • Drowsiness
  • Uncontrollable movements of body (such as shaking, tics, twisting movements or muscle stiffness or rigidity)
  • Rigidity and tremor (similar to Parkinson’s disease)
  • Restlessness
  • Diarrhoea
  • Feeling weak
  • Reduced blood pressure
  • Feeling depressed 

When to consult your doctor

  • If you experience uncontrollable movements of head and neck (occurs in children or young adults)
  • If you experience signs of a brain disorder called neuroleptic malignant syndrome (such as high fever, high blood pressure, convulsions (fits) sweating and overproduction of saliva)
  • If you experience signs of severe allergic reactions (such as itching, skin rashes, swelling of the face, lips and throat, breathing difficulties)
  • If you experience signs of blood disorders such as breathing problems, headache and tiredness. Your lips, nail beds and ears may look blue
  • If you experience signs of heart disorders which includes slow heart beats, heart attack, stopping of the heart

Health Tips for Metoclopramide

  • Take metoclopramide exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than the recommended dose, and do not stop taking it without consulting your healthcare provider
  • Do not drink alcohol while you are taking metoclopramide because it may make some side effects worse
  • Metoclopramide may make you sleepy and affect your ability to drive or operate machinery. Do not drive or using machines
  • Drink lot of fluids, such as water or fruit juice to keep yourself hydrated. Avoid eating high-fat or spicy foods
  • Metoclopramide is not recommended for use in pregnant or planning for pregnancy or breast feeding
