Introduction About PHENATE 25MG INJECTION
PHENATE 25MG INJECTION contains Fluphenazine which belongs to the group of medicines called Antipsychotic drugs. It is used to manage chronic schizophrenia in patients who require prolonged parenteral neuroleptic therapy. Schizophrenia is a serious type of mental disorder in which the ability to interpret reality gets impaired. It is characterized by symptoms such as hallucinations, abnormal thoughts, delusions and extremely disordered behaviour.
PHENATE 25MG INJECTION is not recommended for use if you have severe liver disorders, suspected or established subcortical brain damage, severely depressed states/coma, prolactin dependent tumors (like breast cancer, prolactinoma), Parkinson's disease, severe blood cell (leucopenia) or bone marrow damage or history of neuroleptic malignant syndrome.
Avoid consumption of alcohol while receiving this medicine. Before receiving this medicine, inform your doctor if you have slow heartbeat issues, pre-existing damage to heart, congenital/family history of prolonged QT interval, coronary heart disease, conduction disturbance and arrhythmia.
Also inform your doctor if you have chronic respiratory disorders, asthma, liver or kidney dysfunction, adrenal tumor, very low or high blood pressure, low potassium levels, history of organic brain disorders, epileptic seizures, depression or reduced consciousness. PHENATE 25MG INJECTION should be used with caution in patients who are exposed to high temperature, have glaucoma, enlarged prostate, trouble passing urine or narrowing of opening from stomach to duodenum.
PHENATE 25MG INJECTION should be used with caution in pregnant women. It is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women. It is not recommended for use in children (aged below 12 years). It should be used with caution in elderly patients (aged 65 years and above) especially dementia-related psychosis as it may increase the risk of dementia. The common side effects associated with the use of PHENATE 25MG INJECTION are dyskinesia (muscle weakness), fatigue and noticeable flattening. Consult your doctor before receiving.

PHENATE 25MG INJECTION works by blocking certain receptors in the brain, suppressing the release of hypothalamic and hypophyseal hormones that are responsible for abnormal brain activity causing schizophrenia.
How to use PHENATE 25MG INJECTION
PHENATE 25MG INJECTION will be given to you only by a doctor or a nurse into muscle (intramuscularly) or under the skin (subcutaneously). Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration for you depending upon your age, body weight and disease condition.
Side Effects Of PHENATE 25MG INJECTION
Common
- dyskinesia (involuntary muscle movements), akathisia (loss of ability to remain still)

Stop receiving PHENATE 25MG INJECTION and contact your doctor if you experience any of the following side effects:
- inflammation in the mouth and throat, fever and flu like infections
- blood clot in veins enters lungs through bloodstream causing difficulty in breathing and chest pain
- severe tardive dyskinesia (persistent, irreversible, involuntary facial and jaw movements)
Warning & Precautions
Pregnancy
PHENATE 25MG INJECTION should be used with caution in pregnant women only if considered clearly necessary as safety data has not been established yet. Consult your doctor before receiving.
Breastfeeding
PHENATE 25MG INJECTION is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women as it may pass through breast milk. Consult your doctor before receiving.
Driving and Using Machines
Do not drive or operate any machines if you feel like your mental and physical abilities are impaired while receiving PHENATE 25MG INJECTION.
Alcohol
Avoid excessive consumption of alcohol while receiving PHENATE 25MG INJECTION because it might potentiate the effects of alcohol.
Kidney
PHENATE 25MG INJECTION should be used with caution in patients with kidney dysfunction. Consult your doctor before receiving.
Liver
PHENATE 25MG INJECTION is not recommended for use if you have severe liver disorders.
It should be used with caution in patients with liver dysfunction. Consult your doctor before receiving.
Allergy
Do not receive PHENATE 25MG INJECTION if you are allergic to Fluphenazine, sesame oil, phenothiazine derivatives, antipsychotics and/or any other ingredients of this medicine. Consult your doctor before receiving.
Lungs
PHENATE 25MG INJECTION should be used with caution in patients with chronic respiratory disorders or asthma. Consult your doctor before receiving.
Heart Disease
PHENATE 25MG INJECTION should be used with caution in patients with slow heartbeat issues, pre-existing damage to heart, congenital/family history of prolonged QT interval, coronary heart disease, conduction disturbance and arrhythmia. Consult your doctor before receiving.
Others
PHENATE 25MG INJECTION is not recommended for use if you:
- have subcortical brain damage
- have blood dyscrasia
- have existing prolactin tumours (like breast cancer, prolactinoma)
- have blood disorders including leukopenia, neutropenia and agranulocytosis
- have severe blood cell or bone marrow damage
- have Parkinson’s disease
- have history of neuroleptic malignant syndrome
- have severe depression
- are in coma
Before receiving PHENATE 25MG INJECTION, inform your doctor if you:
- have adrenal tumour or pheochromocytoma
- have very low or very high blood pressure
- have history of organic brain disorders or epileptic seizures
- have subcortical brain damage
- have depression
- have reduced consciousness
- have glaucoma
- have pyloric stenosis (narrow opening of stomach into duodenum)
- have prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate)
- have urine retention
- are exposed to high temperature
- have low potassium levels in blood
- are at risk of stroke or have reduced blood supply to brain
- have personal or family history of venous thrombosis
Use in Paediatrics:
PHENATE 25MG INJECTION is not recommended for use in children (below 12 years). Consult your doctor before receiving.
Use in Geriatrics:
PHENATE 25MG INJECTION should be used with caution in elderly patients (aged 65 years and above) especially dementia-related psychosis as it may increase the risk of dementia. Consult your doctor before receiving.
Interactions
A. Drug-Drug Interactions:
Before receiving PHENATE 25MG INJECTION, inform your doctor, if you are taking any of the following medicine:
- CNS depressants (medicines used to lower CNS activity) Ex. opiates (pain killers), hypnotics (sleeping pills)
- medicines used to manage mental and psychological disorders Ex. antidepressants (fluoxetine, paroxetine, lithium, phenylanalinine), other antipsychotics (haloperidol), tranquilisers (diazepam)
- antiepileptics (Ex. carbamazepine, phenobarbital, phenytoin) to manage epilepsy
- antihistamines (Ex. cetirizine) to manage pain and inflammation
- antimalarial (chloroquine) to manage malaria
- diuretics (thiazide) to remove extra fluid from body
- warfarin (used for thinning of blood)
- metoclopramide, alizapride, cimetidine (manages stomach problems)
- epinephrine (manages allergic reactions)
- clonidine methyldopa guanethidine, propranolol, reserpine (manages high blood pressure)
- piperazine (manages worm infections), colistin polymixin B (manages bacterial infections)
- primrose oil containing medicines (used to manage skin problems)
- clozapine (to manage schizophrenia)
- gonadorelin (used for fertility)
- medicines that prolong QT interval Ex. azithromycin
Overdosage:
PHENATE 25MG INJECTION will be administered only by a doctor or a nurse in a hospital and so it is unlikely to receive an overdose. However, consult your doctor or nurse if there are any unusual symptoms like severe drowsiness, respiratory disorder, loss of consciousness, confusions, coma, extrapyramidal symptoms (such as pseudoparkinsonism, dystonia, dyskinesia), seizures, high or low temperature, blurred vision, absence of bowel motility, urinary retention and slow/rapid heartbeat.
