Uses of Ephedrine

Ephedrine is used to treat hypotension (low blood pressure) which commonly occurs following a spinal anesthesia. It raises blood pressure by temporarily narrowing the blood vessels supplying the heart.

How Ephedrine works

Ephedrine is an adrenergic agonist. It works by binding to the alpha and beta receptors of the adrenergic system. This action stimulates the heart, improves heart functions, and increases blood pressure by temporarily narrowing the blood vessels supplying the heart. As a result, it restores blood pressure in patients having hypotension following spinal anesthesia.
