Uses of Bempedoic Acid

Bempedoic Acid is used alone or together with cholesterol-lowering medicine (statins) to treat primary hypercholesterolaemia (condition in which blood cholesterol level rises above the normal limits) or mixed dyslipidaemia in adults when statins become intolerable to treat the condition in affected individuals.

How Bempedoic Acid works

Bempedoic Acid works by inhibiting ATP citrate lyase (enzyme responsible for synthesis of cholesterol especially low-density lipoprotein (LDL) / bad cholesterol) which leads to enhanced LDL uptake and clearance in the liver resulting in lowered total blood cholesterol levels. 

Common side effects of Bempedoic Acid

• Anaemia (reduced red blood cell count)
• Gout (severe joint pain) due to increased blood uric acid levels
• Pain in shoulders, legs, or arms
