Introduction About ZOVIRAX SUSPENSION
ZOVIRAX SUSPENSION contains Acyclovir which belongs to the group of medicines called Antivirals. It is used for the management of chickenpox, shingles, cold sores, genital herpes and other herpes simplex infections. It is also used to manage recurrent attacks and herpes infections in people with low immunity.
Chickenpox is an infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus and symptoms include an itchy rash with small, fluid-filled blisters. Shingles are defined as the reaction of the chicken pox virus in the body causing a painful rash. Cold sores, (a virus causing contagious sores, most often around the mouth or on the genitals), genital herpes (a common sexually transmitted infection caused by the herpes simplex virus) and symptoms include genital pain and sores, pain, itching and small sores.
Before taking ZOVIRAX SUSPENSION inform your doctor if you have kidney problems or dehydration. ZOVIRAX SUSPENSION should be used with caution by pregnant and breastfeeding women only if recommended by your doctor. ZOVIRAX SUSPENSION should be used with caution in children under 12 years of age and elderly over 65 years of age. The most common side effects of taking ZOVIRAX SUSPENSION are headache and dizziness. Contact your doctor if the symptom gets worse or persists.
Uses Of ZOVIRAX SUSPENSION
It is indicated for the management of the following viral infections:
- Manage chickenpox and shingles
- Manage cold sores, genital herpes and other herpes simplex infections
- Prevents recurrent attacks and herpes simplex infection in people with low immunity
How ZOVIRAX SUSPENSION Works
ZOVIRAX SUSPENSION works by killing or stopping the growth of viruses (herpes virus DNA). Acyclovir has a higher affinity for viral DNA cells than human DNA cells and incorporates into the viral DNA and causes DNA chain termination and inactivation, leading to the death of cells.
How to use ZOVIRAX SUSPENSION
Take ZOVIRAX SUSPENSION as advised by your physician. Shake well before use. Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration for you depending on your age, body weight and disease condition.
Side Effects Of ZOVIRAX SUSPENSION
Common
- headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain
- rash
- photosensitivity (skin reaction after exposure to light), itching
- feeling tired
- unexplained fever (high temperature), feeling faint, especially when standing up.
Uncommon
- itchy, redness of the skin, hive-like rash
- hair loss.
Rare
- shortness of breath
- fall in the number of white blood cells
- changes in results of blood, kidney and liver function test
- swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat
- increase in liver enzymes
Stop taking ZOVIRAX SUSPENSION and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:

- signs of liver problems like hepatitis, hyperbilirubinemia, jaundice (yellowing of the skin and the whites of the eyes)
How To Manage Side Effects
Headache:
Rest and relax. Drink plenty of fluids such as water or ORS. Apply a pain-relieving balm on the head if necessary. Contact your doctor if the symptom does not improve.
Nausea or vomiting:
Take simple meals and do not eat rich or spicy food.
Diarrhoea:
Drink lots of fluids, such as water or fruit juice to keep you hydrated. Do not consume any medicine on your own without consulting your doctor.
Stomach pain:
Try to rest and relax. Try to have smaller meals but take them frequently. Keep a heating pad on your stomach. If the symptom does not improve, contact your doctor.
Dizziness:
If ZOVIRAX SUSPENSION makes you feel dizzy, take rest until you feel better. Do not drive or operate machines.
Itchy skin:
Try to use an unscented moisturiser. If the symptom does not improve, contact your doctor immediately.
Warning & Precautions

Pregnancy
ZOVIRAX SUSPENSION should be used with caution by pregnant women only if recommended by your doctor. Consult your doctor before taking ZOVIRAX SUSPENSION.

Breastfeeding
ZOVIRAX SUSPENSION should be used with caution by breastfeeding women only if recommended by your doctor Consult your doctor before taking ZOVIRAX SUSPENSION.

Driving and Using Machines
Do not drive or operate any machines if you feel dizzy, drowsiness or sleepy after taking ZOVIRAX SUSPENSION.

Kidney
ZOVIRAX SUSPENSION should be used with caution in patients with kidney problems. Consult your doctor before taking ZOVIRAX SUSPENSION.

Allergy
Do not take ZOVIRAX SUSPENSION if you are allergic to Acyclovir or valacyclovir or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.
Others
Before taking ZOVIRAX SUSPENSION, inform your doctor:
- dehydration
Use in pediatrics:
ZOVIRAX SUSPENSION should be used with caution in children under 12 years of age. Consult your doctor before taking ZOVIRAX SUSPENSION.
Use in geriatrics:
ZOVIRAX SUSPENSION should be used with caution in elderly patients (aged 65 years and above). Consult your doctor before taking ZOVIRAX SUSPENSION.
Interactions
A. Drug-Drug interactions:
Before receiving ZOVIRAX SUSPENSION, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicine:
- probenecid ( used to manage gout)
- cimetidine (used to manage stomach ulcers)
- drugs acting on the immune system (Ex. mycophenolate mofetil, cyclosporine and tacrolimus)
Overdosage:
If you or anyone else accidentally take too much of ZOVIRAX SUSPENSION, consult your doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital. Symptoms of overdose are coma, seizures, agitation and lethargy etc.
