Introduction About UNIAZ 16MG TABLET

UNIAZ 16MG TABLET contains Azelnidipine which belongs to the group of medicines called Antihypertensive agents. It is indicated for the management of stage-I and stage-II hypertension. Hypertension is a condition in which force of the blood is consistently high against the walls of the arteries which can increase the risk of heart disease, kidney disease or stroke.

Stage I hypertension has systolic pressure ranging from 130 to 139 mm Hg or a diastolic pressure ranging from 80 to 89 mm Hg. Stage II hypertension has systolic pressure ranging from 140 mm Hg or higher or a diastolic pressure ranging from 90 mm Hg or higher.

Along management with UNIAZ 16MG TABLET, your doctor might advise you to follow certain lifestyle changes such as eating healthy diet, taking adequate sleep, weight and stress management and avoid smoking or drinking alcohol.    

Before taking UNIAZ 16MG TABLET inform your doctor if you have liver or kidney diseases or any other medical conditions. Your doctor might ask you to take some blood tests before initiating the management with UNIAZ 16MG TABLET to understand the existing condition and for proper use of this medicine.

UNIAZ 16MG TABLET is not recommended for use in pregnant women or women who has a possibility to conceive, and breast-feeding women. UNIAZ 16MG TABLET should be used with caution in elderly patients.   

Avoid consumption of grapefruit juice while taking UNIAZ 16MG TABLET as it may increase the risk of low blood pressure. The most common side effects of taking UNIAZ 16MG TABLET are dizziness, light-headedness, nausea, constipation, fatigue and stomach pain. Consult your doctor if any of the side effect worsens.

How UNIAZ 16MG TABLET Works

UNIAZ 16MG TABLET works by inhibiting the movement of calcium ions into both vascular smooth muscle and cardiac muscle resulting in lower blood pressure by relaxing the blood vessels and improving the flow of blood to the heart muscles.

How to use UNIAZ 16MG TABLET

Take UNIAZ 16MG TABLET as advised by your doctor. Swallow the medicine with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew the medicine. Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration for you depending upon your age and general health condition. Do not stop taking UNIAZ 16MG TABLET unless your doctor advises you to stop.

Side Effects Of UNIAZ 16MG TABLET

Common

  • rash, itching
  • headache, heavy headed feeling, unsteady
  • dizziness, light-headedness, drowsiness
  • gastric distress, nausea, constipation, stomach pain, diarrhoea
  • palpitation
  • sensation of warmth, skin flushing on face portion
  • fatigue, abnormal sensation
  • frequent urination
  • swelling
  • numbness

Stop taking UNIAZ 16MG TABLET and inform your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:

  • jaundice and liver function failure (signs include pain in upper abdomen, abdominal swelling, tremors, disorientation, nausea, vomiting)
  • cardiac arrest (signs include chest pain, palpitations, irregular heartbeat and shortness of breath)
  • sinus block (heart rhythm disorder)
  • slowed heart rate (bradycardia)

How To Manage Side Effects

Constipation

Eat plenty of fiber rich foods such as fresh fruits, vegetables, and cereals and drink plenty of water. Exercise more regularly. Consult your doctor if the symptom does not improve.

Diarrhea

Drink lot of fluids, such as water to keep yourself hydrated. Avoid eating high-fat or spicy foods. Try to avoid taking any medicine on your own to manage diarrhea and consult your doctor if the symptom gets worse.

Dizziness Or Drowsiness

Lie down until dizziness is gone, then get up slowly. Move slowly and carefully, do not hurry. Get adequate rest. Drink plenty of water and other fluids. Avoid coffee, cigarettes, alcohol and drugs. Consult your doctor if the symptom gets worse.

Headache

Drink ample amount of water and avoid skipping meals. Get adequate rest. Try to be relaxed and stress free. Apply pain relieving balm on your forehead if necessary. Consult your doctor if the symptom does not improve.

Nausea And Vomiting

Stick to simple meals while taking this medicine. Avoid eating oily rich, fried or spicy foods. Do not lie down or sleep immediately after eating. Consult your doctor if the symptom does not improve.

Stomach Pain

Try to rest and relax. Try to have smaller and frequent meals and have them slowly. Keep a heat pad on your stomach. Ask for your doctor’s advice if stomach pain doesn’t improve.

Pregnancy

UNIAZ 16MG TABLET is not recommended for use in pregnant women or women who has a possibility to conceive because it may affect the developing baby resulting in death of the fetus, reduced weight of the born child or extension in pregnancy and delivery period. Consult your doctor before taking UNIAZ 16MG TABLET.

Breastfeeding

Contraindicated

UNIAZ 16MG TABLET is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women as it passes through the breast milk. Consult your doctor before taking UNIAZ 16MG TABLET

Driving and Using Machines

Use with Caution

Do not drive or operate any machines if you feel giddy (whirling or spinning sensation) after taking UNIAZ 16MG TABLET.

Kidney

Use with Caution

UNIAZ 16MG TABLET should be taken with caution in patients with kidney problems. Consult your doctor before taking it.  

Liver

Use with Caution

UNIAZ 16MG TABLET should be taken with caution in patients with liver problems. Consult your doctor before taking it.

Allergy

Contraindicated

Do not take UNIAZ 16MG TABLET if you are allergic to Azelnidipine or any other ingredients of this medicine.

Use In Pediatrics

Safety of UNIAZ 16MG TABLET in babies with low birth weight, newborn babies, lactating babies, infants or small children is not yet established. Consult your child’s doctor for advice.

UNIAZ 16MG TABLET should be used with caution in elderly patients (aged 65 years and above). Consult your doctor before taking UNIAZ 16MG TABLET.

Interactions

A. Drug-Drug Interactions:

Before taking UNIAZ 16MG TABLET, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines:

  • medicines used to manage fungal infections (Ex. itraconazole, miconazole)
  • medicines used to manage HIV infections (Ex. ritonavir, saquinavir, indinavir, delavirdine)
  • cimetidine (used to manage stomach problems)
  • imatinib (used to manage cancer)
  • medicines used to manage bacterial infections (Ex. erythromycin, clarithromycin, rifampicin)
  • cyclosporine (used to suppress the immune system to stop organ rejection after transplant) 
  • medicines used to manage anxiety, insomnia (Ex. diazepam, midazolam, triazolam, tandospirone)
  • phenytoin, phenobarbital (used to manage seizures)
  • medicines used to inhibit the occurence pregnancy (Ex. estradiol, norethindrone)
  • digoxin (used to manage heart diseases)
  • simvastatin (used to control high cholesterol levels)

B. Drug-Food Interactions:  

Avoid consumption of grapefruit juice while taking UNIAZ 16MG TABLET as it may increase the risk of low blood pressure.

Overdosage:

If you or anyone else accidentally take too much of UNIAZ 16MG TABLET, consult your doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital. Overdosage symptoms of UNIAZ 16MG TABLET are abnormally low blood pressure and reflex tachycardia (rapid heartbeat).
