Introduction About TENEMET SR 500MG TABLET

TENEMET SR 500MG TABLET is used to manage type II diabetes mellitus when diet and exercise alone does not result in adequate blood sugar control. It contains Metformin which belongs to the group of medicines called Anti-diabetic agents. It makes the body more sensitive to insulin (a hormone involved in glucose metabolism). This helps our body cells to utilize more amount of the circulating blood glucose, thereby reducing blood sugar levels. Additionally, it also manages glucose production by the liver and reduces its absorption in the body.

Along with the therapy, your doctor might ask you to make certain lifestyle changes such as following a healthy diet, regular physical exercise and quitting alcohol consumption. Before taking TENEMET SR 500MG TABLET inform your doctor if you have any liver, kidney or heart problems. You must also inform your doctor if you have any severe systemic infections or are severely dehydrated due to excessive vomiting or diarrhea recently.

TENEMET SR 500MG TABLET is not recommended for use in patients with severe uncontrollable diabetes. It is also not suitable for use in patients with shock or problems with breathing or blood circulation. Consult your doctor before taking TENEMET SR 500MG TABLET if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. The most common side effects are stomach upset and diarrhea. These side effects can be controlled when the medicine is taken along with meals. However, if these side effect bothers you or worsens contact your doctor.

How TENEMET SR 500MG TABLET Works

How to use TENEMET SR 500MG TABLET

• Take TENEMET SR 500MG TABLET preferably after meals or as advised by your physician
• Swallow the medicine with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew the medicine
• Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration of therapy for you depending upon your age, body weight and disease condition
• Do not stop taking TENEMET SR 500MG TABLET unless your doctor advice you to stop

Side Effects Of TENEMET SR 500MG TABLET

Common side effects of TENEMET SR 500MG TABLET:

• diarrhea, stomach pain, loss of appetite
• changes in taste, metallic taste

Stop taking TENEMET SR 500MG TABLET and consult your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:

• serious allergic reaction (such as hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat causing difficulty in breathing or swallowing)
• signs of liver problems (such as nausea or vomiting, stomach pain, unusual or unexplained tiredness, loss of appetite, dark urine, yellowing of the skin or the whites of the eyes)
• signs of lactic acidosis (cold hands or feet, dizziness or light-headedness, slow or irregular heartbeat, weakness or tiredness, unusual muscle pain, trouble breathing, sleepiness or drowsiness, stomach pains, nausea or vomiting)

Alcohol

Avoid consumption of alcohol while taking TENEMET SR 500MG TABLET as it may increase the risk of unwanted side effects.

Kidney

Contraindicated

TENEMET SR 500MG TABLET is not recommended for use in patients with severe kidney problems.

Liver

Consult your doctor

TENEMET SR 500MG TABLET is not recommended for use in patients with severe liver problems. It should be used with caution in patients with other liver problems.

Allergy

Contraindicated

Do not take TENEMET SR 500MG TABLET if you are allergic to Metformin or any other ingredients of this medicine.

Lungs

Contraindicated

It is not recommended for use in patients with severe infection of lungs or respiratory tract.

Heart Disease

Contraindicated

TENEMET SR 500MG TABLET is not recommended for use in patients with heart problems (such as acute heart failure or a recent heart attack).

Use In Geriatrics

Interactions

A. Drug-Drug interactions:

Before taking TENEMET SR 500MG TABLET, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines such as:

• Anti-diabetics agents (Ex. teneligliptin, rosiglitazone, pioglitazone, glimepiride)
• Diuretics (Ex. furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide)
• Non-steroidal inflammatory agents (Ex. ibuprofen, celecoxib)
• Antihypertensives (Ex. atenolol, propranolol, captopril, enalapril, ramipril, lisinopril, losartan, valsartan, olmesartan, telmisartan)
• Bronchodilators (Ex. salbutamol, terbutaline)
• Corticosteroids (Ex. hydrocortisone, prednisolone)
• Calcium-channel blockers (Ex. verapamil)
• Antibiotics (Ex. rifampicin)
• H2 blockers (Ex. cimetidine)
• Anti-viral agents (Ex. dolutegravir)
• Anti-anginals (Ex. ranolazine)
• Folic acid inhibitors (Ex. trimethoprim)
• Kinase inhibitors (Ex. vandetanib, crizotinib, olaparib)
• Anti-fungals (Ex. isavuconazole)

Overdosage:

If you or anyone else accidentally takes more TENEMET SR 500MG TABLET, consult your doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital. Symptoms of overdose are vomiting, stomach pain with muscle cramps, feeling generally unwell with severe tiredness and difficulty in breathing.
