What is STARCAD?
- STARCAD is a combination of Metoprolol and Telmisartan
What STARCAD is used for?
Metoprolol:
- It is used to manage high blood pressure, angina pectoris, irregular heart rhythm, the symptoms caused by an overactive thyroid gland (thyrotoxicosis)
Telmisartan:
- It is used to manage high blood pressure (hypertension) in certain high-risk people aged 55 years and older to help lower their risk of having certain cardiovascular problems such as stroke, heart attack, or death

Talk to your doctor before taking this medicine, if you:
- are allergic to metoprolol, telmisartan or other beta-blockers or any of the other ingredients of this medicine
- suffer with heart conduction or rhythm problems
- have severe or uncontrolled heart failure
- are in shock caused by heart problems
- suffer with blocked blood vessels including blood circulation problems
- have a slow heart rate or have suffered a heart attack
- suffer with unmanageed phaeochromocytoma (high blood pressure due to a tumour near the kidney)
- suffer from increased acidity of the blood (metabolic acidosis)
- have low blood pressure
- have or have had breathing difficulties or asthma including COPD
- suffer with diabetes
- have liver or kidney disease or failure
- have difficulties in passing urine
- have low levels of potassium (hypokalaemia) or sodium (hyponatraemia) in your blood
- have high levels of calcium (hypercalcaemia)
- suffer with gout due to high levels of uric acid (hyperuricaemia) in your blood causing crystals to deposit in joints of hands or feet causing pain
- have myasthenia gravis
- have or have suffered from psoriasis
STARCAD and Alcohol
- You are advised to avoid alcohol whilst taking this medicine. Alcohol may increase the blood pressure lowering effect of this medicine
- STARCAD are not recommended during pregnancy or breast-feeding
- If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor for advice before taking this medicine
- Do not give this medicine to children
- STARCAD may affect your ability to drive or use machines. If the medicines make you feel sick, dizzy or tired, or give you a headache, do not drive or use machines and contact your doctor immediately
Tell your doctor if you are taking, have taken recently or might take any other medicines.
Do not take STARCAD if you are already taking:
- monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or tricyclic or SSRI antidepressants for depression
- disopyramide or quinidine, amiodarone, propafenone (to manage irregular heartbeat)
- cimetidine (to manage stomach ulcers)
- hydralazine, clonidine or prazosin (to manage high blood pressure)
- barbiturates (to manage epilepsy)
- phenothiazines (for mental illness)
- anaesthetics such as cyclopropane or trichloroethylene or lidocaine
- aldesleukin (to manage some cancers, particularly cancer of the kidney)
- alprostadil (to manage erectile dysfunction)
- anxiolytics or hypnotics (e.g. temazepam, nitrazepam, diazepam)
- indometacin or celecoxib (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs - NSAIDs)
- rifampicin (antibiotic) or terbinafine (antifungal)
- cocaine
- oestrogens such as a contraceptive pill or hormone replacement therapy
- corticosteroids (e.g. hydrocortisone, prednisolone)
- adrenaline (epinephrine) or noradrenaline (norepinephrine), used in anaphylactic shock or other sympathomimetics
- medicines used to manage diabetes
- moxisylyte (used in Raynaud’s syndrome)
- mefloquine (to manage malaria)
- tropisetron (to prevent nausea and vomiting)
- xanthines such as aminophylline or theophylline (to manage asthma)
- medicines to manage migranes such as ergotamine
- cardiac glycosides e.g. digoxin (to manage heart conditions)
- hydroxychloroquine (to manage rheumatoid arthritis)
- diphenhydramine (sedative antihistamine)
- Take STARCAD exactly as your doctor tells you to take it
- Take this medicine one time each day at the same time
- Your doctor will tell you how much medicine to take and when to take it
If you take too much STARCAD
- If you take too much STARCAD, call your doctor or go to the nearest hospital emergency room right away
If you miss a dose of STARCAD
- If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is close to your next dose, do not take the missed dose. Take the next dose at your regular time
If you stop taking STARCAD
- Do not suddenly stop taking this medicine before your doctor tells to
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
Metoprolol:
- allergic reaction such as itching, difficulty breathing or swelling of the face, lips, throat or tongue
Telmisartan:
- injury or death to your unborn baby
- low blood pressure
- swelling of the face, tongue, throat
- difficulty breathing
- blistering of the skin or rash
Metoprolol:
- tiredness
- dizziness
- headache, a slow heart rate
- feeling or being sick, stomach pain
Telmisartan:
- sinus pain and congestion (sinusitis)
- back pain
- diarrhea
Metoprolol:
- depression, nightmares
- inability to think clearly
- sleepiness or difficulty in sleeping, tingling or ‘pins and needles’
- difficulty breathing
- heart failure, irregular heart rate
- palpitation
- water retention causing swelling
- Raynaud’s phenomenon (causing pain, numbness, coldness and blueness of the fingers)
- diarrhoea or constipation
- skin rash
- muscle cramps
Metoprolol:
- changes in the results of blood tests, effects on blood clotting causing easy or unexplained bruising
- changes in personality, hallucinations
- visual disturbances, dry or irritated eyes
- ringing in the ears
- loss of hearing with high doses
- heart conduction problems
- chest pain, gangrene in patients with severe poor circulation
- runny nose, dry mouth
- weight gain sensitivity to light
- increased sweating, hair loss, worsening or new psoriasis
- joint inflammation(arthritis)
- disturbances of sexual desire and performance
- changes in liver function tests
- Store at room temperature (15-25ºC)
- Do not use this medicine after the expiry date
- Keep out of reach of children
