Introduction About SMARTI M TABLET
SMARTI M TABLET is a combination of Montelukast and Rupatadine which belongs to the group of medicines called Leukotriene receptor antagonists and Antihistamines respectively. It is used to manage seasonal allergic rhinitis which is a condition that occurs due to inflammation of the inside part of the nose caused by an allergen such as pollen, dust, mold or flakes of skin from certain animals which is characterized by sneezing, coughing, runny nose, stuffy nose, itching (mostly eyes, nose, mouth, throat and skin) and headache.
Before taking SMARTI M TABLET, inform your doctor if your asthma or breathing gets worse, and/or allergic to Montelukast or Rupatadine, have intolerance to certain sugars such as lactose, have hypokalemia (low blood levels of potassium) and/or have heart, kidney or liver problems.
SMARTI M TABLET is not recommended for use in patients with impaired kidney or liver function. SMARTI M TABLET is not recommended for use during pregnancy and should be used in breast-feeding women only if clearly advised by the doctor.
SMARTI M TABLET is not recommended for use in children and adolescents (below 15 years of age). The most common side effects of taking SMARTI M TABLET are abdominal pain, headache, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, dry mouth and rash. Consult your doctor if any of the side effects get worse.

How SMARTI M TABLET Works
SMARTI M TABLET is used to manage the symptoms of allergic rhinitis, where Montelukast reduces the inflammation of the airways that provides relief to the symptoms associated with allergies, and Rupatadine blocks the effects of histamine (chemical messenger) that cause allergic reactions, thereby providing relief from allergic symptoms such as swelling, itching, sneezing, running nose, rashes and watery eyes.
How to use SMARTI M TABLET
Take SMARTI M TABLET as advised by your physician. Swallow SMARTI M TABLET with a glass of water and do not chew or crush the medicine. Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration for you depending upon your age, body weight and disease condition.
Side Effects Of SMARTI M TABLET
Common
- signs of upper respiratory infection such as common cold, sinusitis (inflammation of nasal sinus), pharyngitis (sore throat)
- diarrhea
- nausea, vomiting
- rash, fever
- sleepiness
- headache, dizziness
- dry mouth
- sensation of weakness and tiredness
Uncommon
- signs of behavior and mood related changes such as dream abnormalities, including nightmares, trouble sleeping, sleepwalking, irritability, feeling anxious, restlessness
- drowsiness
- tingling or prickling sensation
- nosebleed
- indigestion
- bruising
- red, itchy skin
- back, joint or muscle pain
- muscle cramps
- swelling
- increased appetite
- difficulty while concentrating
- nasal dryness, stuffy nose
- abdominal pain
- dry throat, cough
- increased thirst
- constipation
- general discomfort
- increased weight
Rare
- increased heart rate
- behavior and mood related changes such as disturbance in attention, memory impairment, uncontrolled muscle movements
Stop taking SMARTI M TABLET and contact your doctor if you experience any of the following side effects:
- signs of allergic reactions such as swelling of the face, eyelids, lips, tongue and/or throat which may cause difficulty in breathing or swallowing
- signs of behavior and mood related changes such as agitation including aggressive behavior or hostility, depression, hallucinations and disorientation
- seizure, tremor
- increased bleeding tendency
- sensing fast heartbeat (palpitation)
- signs of churg-strauss syndrome (a disorder marked by inflammation of blood vessel) such as tingling, prickling or numbness sensation in arms and legs, worsening of pulmonary symptoms (such as blue lip or skin, dizziness, chest pain) or rash and fever, flu-like symptoms cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, headaches
- swelling (inflammation) of the lungs
- severe skin reactions such as erythema multiforme
How To Manage Side Effects
Diarrhea:
Drink lot of fluids such as water to keep yourself hydrated. Try to avoid taking any medicine on your own to manage diarrhea and consult your doctor if the symptom gets worse.
Dizziness:
Lie down until dizziness passes away and then move slowly and carefully. Take plenty amount of rest and drink plenty of fluids. Consult and inform your doctor if the symptom does not improve.
Headache:
Apply hot or cold-water bag on your head. Try taking rest in a quiet and dark room. Drink tea or coffee. Consult and inform your doctor if the symptom does not improve.
Nausea and vomiting:
Try to take SMARTI M TABLET with or just after a meal or a snack. Stick to simple meals. Avoid eating rich or spicy food. Consult your doctor if the symptom gets worse.
Constipation:
Try to eat more high-fiber foods such as fresh fruit, vegetables, cereals and drink plenty of water. Try doing exercise regularly (going for a daily walk or run). Consult your doctor if the symptom does not improve.
Dry mouth:
Sip water regularly and other sugar free liquids. Do not use mouthwashes that contain alcohol because they can make your mouth dry, use mouthwash that is used only for dry mouth. Limit your caffeine intake. Avoid smoking or using tobacco products. Consult your doctor if the symptom does not improve.

Pregnancy
SMARTI M TABLET is not recommended for use in pregnant women. Consult your doctor before taking SMARTI M TABLET.

Breastfeeding
SMARTI M TABLET should be used in breastfeeding women only if considered clearly necessary. Consult your doctor before taking SMARTI M TABLET.

Driving and Using Machines
SMARTI M TABLET might cause dizziness or drowsiness. If you experience these side effects, try to avoid driving or operating heavy machines. Consult your doctor before taking SMARTI M TABLET.

Alcohol
Avoid consumption of alcohol while taking SMARTI M TABLET because it may increase the risk of drowsiness. Consult your doctor before taking SMARTI M TABLET.

Kidney
SMARTI M TABLET is not recommended for use in patients with impaired kidney function. Consult your doctor for advice before taking SMARTI M TABLET.

Liver
SMARTI M TABLET is not recommended for use in patients with impaired liver function. Consult your doctor for advice before taking SMARTI M TABLET.

Allergy
SMARTI M TABLET is not recommended for use if you are allergic to Montelukast or Rupatadine.

Lungs
SMARTI M TABLET should be used with caution in patients with asthma or breathing problems. Consult your doctor before taking SMARTI M TABLET.

Heart Disease
SMARTI M TABLET should be used with caution in patients with abnormal patterns of heartbeat (which occurs in some forms of heart disease). Consult your doctor for advice before taking SMARTI M TABLET.
Others
Before taking SMARTI M TABLET, inform your doctor if you:
- are intolerant to certain sugars such as lactose

Use in Pediatrics:
SMARTI M TABLET is not recommended for use in children and adolescents (aged below 15 years). Consult your child’s doctor for advice.
Use in Geriatrics:

Interactions
A. Drug-Drug Interactions:
Before taking SMARTI M TABLET, inform your doctor, if you are taking any of the following medicines:
- aspirin or anti-inflammatory medicines (used to relieve pain, reduce inflammation and fever) Ex. ibuprofen, naproxen, diclofenac
- phenobarbital, phenytoin (used for management of epilepsy)
- rifampicin (used to manage tuberculosis and some other infections)
- gemfibrozil (used for management of high cholesterol)
- ketoconazole (medicine used for fungal infections)
- erythromycin (medicine used to manage bacterial infection)
- antidepressants (medicine used to manage depression) Ex. fluoxetine, citalopram, sertraline
- statins (medicines used to manage high cholesterol levels) Ex. atorvastatin, fluvastatin, pravastatin
- midazolam (drug used for sedation of short duration)
B. Drug-Food Interactions:
SMARTI M TABLET should not be taken in combination with grapefruit juice since it may increase the level of the medicine in the body. Consult your doctor before taking SMARTI M TABLET.
Overdosage:
If you or anyone else accidentally takes too much of SMARTI M TABLET, consult your doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital. Symptoms of overdose are abdominal pain, sleepiness, thirst, headache, vomiting and hyperactivity.
