INTRODUCTION

OLTEF contains Ofloxacin which belongs to a group of medicines called 4-quinolone antibacterial agents. It is used to manage eye infections caused such as bacterial conjunctivitis, bacterial corneal ulcers, bacterial keratitis, blepharitis and ear infections such as otitis externa and media acute otitis.

Ofloxacin belongs to fluoroquinolones which is bactericidal, and its mode of action depends on blocking of bacterial DNA replication by binding itself to an enzyme called DNA gyrase.

Before using OLTEF, inform your doctor if you have any allergic reactions, liver, kidney or heart problems. Inform your doctor, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding before using this medicine. The common side effects are upset stomach, nausea, diarrhea, headache and dizziness. This medicine potentially increases sensitivity to sunlight. Avoid exposure to direct sunlight. If you wear contact lens, remove them before using this medicine and put them back 15 minutes afterwards. If irritations persist, discontinue the use and consult the doctor.

HOW OLTEF WORKS

OLTEF works against bacteria that cause infections and stops the growth of the bacteria causing the infection.

HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS

Headache:

Rest and drink plenty of fluids. Apply a wet or cold cloth on forehead and rest in a quiet, comfortable and dark room.

Nausea:

Take routine meals and avoid spicy foods.

Diarrhea:

Drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration.

Stomach pain:

Place a warm bottle or heated bag on abdomen and drink plenty of water.

Dizziness:

Get up and move around to feel awake and take small naps.

PREGNANCY

OLTEF should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit to the mother justifies the potential risk to the embryo or fetus. Consult your doctor for advice.

BREASTFEEDING

DRIVING AND USING MACHINES

OLTEF may cause temporary blurred vision or other visual disturbances, avoid driving and handling of heavy machines.

ALLERGY

Do not use this medicine if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to Ofloxacin.

HEART DISEASE

OLTEF should be used with caution in patients with prolonged QT interval, very slow heart rhythm, weak heart (heart failure) and history of heart attack (myocardial infarction). Consult your doctor for advice.

OTHERS

  • Tell your doctor if you have defect or ulceration on the surface of the eye, psychiatric illnesses, epilepsy or other seizure disorders.

Use in pediatrics:

  •  OLTEF is not recommended for use in children below 1 year of age.

  • duloxetine (manage depression and anxiety)
  • glyburide, insulin (manages diabetes)
  • live bacterial vaccines
  • ibuprofen, naproxen (manages pain)
  • probenecid (manages gout)
  • theophylline (manages asthma)
  • warfarin (manages blood clot)
  • quindine, hydroquindine, disopyramide, amiodarone, sotalol, dofetilide, ibutilide (manages heart rhythm disorders)
  • tricyclic antidepressants
  • antimicrobials
  • antipsychotics

Overdosage:

  • If you or anyone else accidentally use too much of this medicine, consult your doctor immediately.
