INTRODUCTION
NOSTRA 5MG contains Norethisterone which belongs to the group of medicines called Hormonal Replacement Therapy. It is used to manage menstrual irregularities (such as heavy periods, painful periods and irregular periods) in females.
It can also be used to manage endometriosis (tissue growth outside the uterus), breast cancer and symptoms of pre-menstrual syndrome such as mood disturbances, headache and breast pain in women.
Before taking NOSTRA 5MG, inform your doctor if you have asthma, diabetes, hypertension, liver, kidney, or heart problems. You must also inform your doctor if you have unexplained vaginal bleeding, a history of repeated miscarriages, blood clot problems, migraine headaches or epilepsy before taking NOSTRA 5MG as a precaution.
NOSTRA 5MG is not recommended for use in pregnant women. Inform your doctor before taking NOSTRA 5MG if you are a woman who had repeated miscarriages or developed jaundice or excessive skin itching during their pregnancy.
NOSTRA 5MG is not a contraceptive (birth control pill), therefore it cannot prevent you from becoming pregnant. Women of childbearing potential must use a suitable contraceptive method to avoid pregnancy while taking NOSTRA 5MG.
The most common side effects of taking NOSTRA 5MG are dizziness, weight gain, nausea and vaginal bleeding. Consult your doctor if they trouble you. Also, inform your doctor immediately if you experience sudden chest pain, difficulty in breathing, severe headache, or severe pain and tenderness in your legs.

HOW NOSTRA 5MG WORKS
NOSTRA 5MG is a synthetic progestin which works by mimicking the effects of a naturally occurring female sex hormone called progesterone. This helps in regulating the growth and shedding of the womb which in turn reduces menstrual irregularities. It also reduces the onset the pre-menstrual syndrome, controls the abnormal (excess) growth of uterine tissues and reduces the incidence of cancer in the female body.
DIRECTIONS FOR USE
Always take NOSTRA 5MG as directed by your physician. Swallow the medicine with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew the medicine. Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration of therapy for you depending upon your age, body weight and disease condition. Continue to take NOSTRA 5MG for the stipulated duration mentioned by your doctor to achieve better results.
SIDE EFFECTS OF NOSTRA 5MG
COMMON
- headache
- nausea and vomiting
- hair loss
- breast pain
- stomach pain
- bloating
- abnormal vaginal bleeding or spotting
- weight gain
Stop taking NOSTRA 5MG and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:
- severe allergic reactions (such as swelling of the face, lips, tongue and/or throat which can lead to difficulty in breathing, wheezing, fainting, swelling of the hands and feet, itchy skin rash)
- signs of blood clot in the lungs (such as sudden severe sharp chest pain, difficulty in breathing, rapid heartbeat and coughing up blood)
- signs of blood clot in the brain (such as severe headache, changes in vision, difficulty in speaking, fainting, numbness of one side of the body, stroke)
- signs of blood clot in the legs (such as pain or tenderness of legs, purplish discolouration of legs with redness and warmth)
- symptoms of jaundice such as yellowing of eye whites or skin
- migraine headache
- lump formation in breasts
HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS
Nausea and Vomiting:
Take NOSTRA 5MG with or just after meals. Stick to simple meals. Avoid eating oil-rich or spicy foods. Consult your doctor if your nausea worsens.
Headache:
Rest and relax. Keep yourself hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids such as water or electrolytes. Applying a pain-relieving balm on your forehead can be beneficial. Do not consume excessive alcohol, as it could aggravate your headache. Consult your doctor if your headache worsens.
Stomach pain:
Try to take rest and relax. Eat and drink fluids slowly or try to have frequent smaller meals. Keep a heating pad on your stomach. If the symptom does not improve, contact your doctor.
WARNING & PRECAUTIONS
PREGNANCY
NOSTRA 5MG should not be used in pregnant women and in women who are planning to become pregnant. It is also not recommended for use in women who have or ever had jaundice or developed an itchy rash (small blisters on your abdomen called as pemphigoid gestations) during their pregnancy. Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it. Women of childbearing potential must use a suitable contraceptive method to avoid pregnancy while taking NOSTRA 5MG.
BREASTFEEDING
Consult your doctor before taking NOSTRA 5MG if you are breastfeeding. Your doctor will consider the risks and benefits of the therapy and suggest whether you must take NOSTRA 5MG or not.
DRIVING AND USING MACHINES
NOSTRA 5MG does not affect your ability to drive or operate any heavy tools or machinery.
ALCOHOL
Consumption of alcohol is not recommended during management with NOSTRA 5MG.
KIDNEY
NOSTRA 5MG should be used with caution in patients with kidney disease. Therefore, consult your doctor for advice before taking it.
LIVER
NOSTRA 5MG is not recommended for use in patients with liver disease. Therefore, consult your doctor for advice before taking it.
ALLERGY
Do not take NOSTRA 5MG if you are allergic to Norethisterone or to any other hormonal medicines.
LUNGS
NOSTRA 5MG should be used with caution in patients with lung problems (such as asthma or blood clot in the lungs). Therefore, consult your doctor for advice before taking it.
HEART DISEASE
NOSTRA 5MG is not recommended for use in patients who have or had any serious heart problems (such as heart attack or angina) in the past. It should be used with caution in patients with other heart problems (such as high blood pressure). Therefore, consult your doctor for advice before taking it.
OTHERS
NOSTRA 5MG is not recommended for use if you:
- have unexplained vaginal bleeding (not a menstrual period)
- have or have a family history of blood clot problems (such as deep vein thrombosis)
- have severe itching all over the body (pruritis)
- have porphyria (an inherited blood disorder)
Before taking NOSTRA 5MG, inform your doctor if you:
- have epilepsy
- have migraine
- have depression
- high blood cholesterol levels
- have diabetes
- are a smoker
- are overweight or obese
- have systemic lupus erythematosus (an auto-immune disease, causing skin rash, fatigue, joint pain, muscle pain and fever)
- previously had blood clots in the body
- have been bed-ridden or immobile for a long time
- have a history of repeated miscarriage
- have any pre-planned surgery
- have a serious injury
- are due to have a lab test
Use in pediatrics:
NOSTRA 5MG is not indicated for use in children and adolescents (aged below 18 years). Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.
Use in geriatrics:
The safety and effectiveness of NOSTRA 5MG have not been established in elderly patients. Therefore, NOSTRA 5MG should be used in such a population only if prescribed by the physician.
INTERACTIONS
A. Drug-Drug interactions:
Before taking NOSTRA 5MG, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicine
- Medicines used to manage epilepsy (Ex. phenytoin, carbamazepine)
- medicines used to manage bacterial infections (such as tetracyclines, co-trimoxazole and rifampicin)
- medicines used to manage viral infections (Ex. ritonavir, nelfinavir)
- medicines used to manage cancer (Ex. cisplatin, carboplatin, letrozole)
- medicines used to manage pain and inflammation (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as diclofenac, naproxen, ibuprofen)
- medicines used to manage high blood pressure (Ex. atenolol, propranolol, amlodipine, captopril, enalapril)
- aminoglutethimide (a medicine used to manage Cushing’s syndrome)
- cyclosporin (a medicine used to suppress immune functions)
- St John’s wort (a herbal preparation used to manage depression)
Overdosage:
If you or anyone else accidentally took more NOSTRA 5MG, consult your doctor immediately. Overdosage may cause side effects such as vaginal bleeding, feeling sick or enlargement of the breast.
