INTRODUCTION

LOXAPAC 25MG contains Loxapine which belongs to the group of medicines called Antipsychotics. It is used to manage the manifestations of schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is a chronic and severe mental disorder that affects the way a person thinks, acts, expresses emotions, perceives reality, and relates to others. It is characterized by symptoms such as delusions (beliefs that are away from reality), hallucinations, and disorganized thoughts perceived from disorganized speech.

GBNKEYWORD] is not recommended for use if you are allergic to loxapine, dibenzoxazepine (such as amoxapine), or phenothiazine (such as chlorpromazine). It is also not recommended for use in patients with brain damage, pheochromocytoma (tumour of adrenal glands), blood dyscrasias (blood disorder), comatose state, and/or severe drug-induced depressed states, blood vessel disorder, low white blood cell or low platelet count. It should be used with caution in patients with severe liver disorders, renal insufficiency, and heart disease.

LOXAPAC 25MG is not recommended for use in pregnant and breastfeeding women, which is also not recommended for use in children and adolescents (below 18 years of age). The common side effects associated with the use of LOXAPAC 25MG are tremor, reduced facial expressions, rigidity, akathisia (inability to remain still), drowsiness, dry mouth, and constipation. Consult your doctor if any of the symptom worsens.

HOW LOXAPAC 25MG WORKS

LOXAPAC 25MG works by binding to receptors of certain neurotransmitters such as dopamine and serotonin (chemical messengers responsible for thoughts and mood) that results in suppression of aggressive behaviour thus managing the associated symptom of schizophrenia in affected individual.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

Take LOXAPAC 25MG as advised by your physician. Swallow the medicine with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew the medicine. Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration for you depending upon your age, body weight and disease condition.

SIDE EFFECTS OF LOXAPAC 25MG

COMMON

  • tremor
  • reduced facial expressions
  • rigidity
  • akathisia (inability to remain still)
  • drowsiness
  • dry mouth
  • constipation
  • weight changes
  • altered taste

RARE

  • signs of thrombocytopenia (low blood platelet count) such as unusual bleeding and bruising
  • signs of leukopenia (low white blood cell count) such as fever (above 38°C), chills, sweating, sore throat
  • galactorrhoea (abnormal milky discharge from nipples)
  • amenorrhea (absence of menstruation)
  • gynecomastia (breast enlargement in men)
  • menstrual irregularities
  • signs of hepatitis (inflammation of liver tissue) such as fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting
  • jaundice (condition marked by yellow skin, eyes, and mucous membrane)
  • signs of agranulocytosis (deficiency of granulocytes in blood) such as fever, chills, weakness

Stop taking LOXAPAC 25MG and contact your doctor if you experience any of the following side effects:

  • signs of allergic reactions such as rash, itchy welts, swelling (typically in face, lips, tongue, or throat), difficulty swallowing, or breathing
  • signs of neuroleptic malignant syndrome (serious neurological disorder) such as high fever, sweating, muscles stiffness, fast heartbeat, fast breathing, confusion, drowsiness, or agitation
  • signs of extrapyramidal symptoms (drug-induced movement disorders) such as muscle stiffness, body spasms, upward eyerolling, exaggeration of reflexes, drooling, difficulty in moving body
  • seizures or fits
  • prolonged and painful erection of penis (priapism)
  • signs of decreased white blood cells such as infections, weakness, fever, aches, pains, and flu
  • marked changes in body temperature
  • thoughts of suicide, harming or killing yourself

HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS

Drowsiness:

Lie down until the drowsiness passes and get up slowly. Do not bend down suddenly. Get a lot of rest. Walk slowly and carefully. Take plenty of fluids. Avoid drinking alcohol, or smoking cigarettes. Consult your doctor if the symptom does not improve.

Dry mouth:

Try to drink plenty of cold water. Sip on cold unsweetened drinks and use lip balm if your lips are dry. Try to brush your teeth twice a day and use mouthwash. Consult your doctor if the symptom gets worse. 

Constipation:

Try to eat more high-fibre foods such as fresh fruit, vegetables, cereals, and drink plenty of water. Try doing exercise regularly (going for a daily walk or run). If this does not help, inform your doctor for receiving alternate management for constipation.

PREGNANCY

LOXAPAC 25MG is generally not recommended for use in pregnant women unless it is considered clearly necessary. Consult your doctor before taking LOXAPAC 25MG.

BREASTFEEDING

LOXAPAC 25MG is generally not recommended for use in breastfeeding women unless it is considered clearly necessary. Consult your doctor before taking LOXAPAC 25MG.

DRIVING AND USING MACHINES

Do not drive or operate any machines after taking LOXAPAC 25MG as it may cause drowsiness or blurred vision. Consult your doctor before taking LOXAPAC 25MG.

ALCOHOL

Avoid drinking alcohol while taking LOXAPAC 25MG as it may alter the effect of this medicine. Consult your doctor before taking LOXAPAC 25MG.

KIDNEY

LOXAPAC 25MG should be used with caution in patients with renal insufficiency and severe kidney problems. Consult your doctor before taking LOXAPAC 25MG.

LIVER

LOXAPAC 25MG should be used with caution in patients with severe liver disorders. Consult your doctor before taking LOXAPAC 25MG.

ALLERGY

Do not take LOXAPAC 25MG if you are allergic to loxapine or dibenzoxazepines (such as amoxapine) or phenothiazines (such as chlorpromazine, fluphenazine) or any other ingredients of this medicine.

HEART DISEASE

LOXAPAC 25MG is not recommended for use in patients with heart diseases such as circulatory collapse or severe heart disorder. It should be used with caution in patients with other heart diseases. Consult your doctor before taking LOXAPAC 25MG.

OTHERS

LOXAPAC 25MG is not recommended for use if you have:

  • brain damage  
  • pheochromocytoma (tumour of adrenal glands)
  • blood dyscrasias (condition that affects blood, bone marrow or lymph tissue)
  • comatose or severe drug-induced depressed states (such as drowsiness, slow breathing or weak pulse)
  • schedule to receive anaesthesia in the spine or for a region (such as an arm, leg or the lower part of your body)

Before taking LOXAPAC 25MG, inform your doctor if you:  

  • have glaucoma (eye disorder causing increased pressure inside the eye)
  • have prostatic hypertrophy (prostate gland enlargement)
  • have risk factors for developing blood clots such as family history of blood clots, old age (65 years and above), smoking, obesity, recent major surgery (hip or knee replacement), immobility
  • have alcohol addiction
  • have or had a blackout or seizure
  • have difficulty while urinating
  • have or had prolonged or painful erection
  • have parkinson’s disease (a brain disorder causing loss of control on body movements)
  • have dementia with lewy bodies
  • have a history of breast cancer

Use in Paediatrics:

LOXAPAC 25MG is not recommended for use in children and adolescents (below 18 years of age). Consult your doctor before taking LOXAPAC 25MG.

Use in Geriatrics:

LOXAPAC 25MG is not recommended for use in elderly patients (aged above 65 years) with dementia. It should be used with caution in elderly patients (aged above 65 years) other than dementia. Consult your doctor before taking LOXAPAC 25MG.

INTERACTIONS

A. Drug-Drug Interactions

Before taking LOXAPAC 25MG, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines:  

  • CNS depressants (medicines used to manage disturbed sleeping, anxiety, panic attacks, and seizures) such as barbiturates Ex. phenobarbital, butabarbital
  • anticholinergics such as atropine (used to manage low heart rate)
  • vasopressor agent (medicines used to raise the blood pressure) Ex. norepinephrine, levarterenol, or phenylephrine
  • medicine used to manage seizures or epilepsy Ex. carbamazepine
  • hormonal supplement used to manage sexual dysfunction, lupus, depression, adrenal insufficiency Ex. dehydroepiandrosterone
  • medicines used to manage moderate to severe pain Ex. hydromorphone, tramadol
  • medicines used to manage depression or mood disorders Ex. lithium
  • medicine used to manage slow stomach emptying in diabetic patients Ex. metoclopramide
  • medicine used to manage fibromyalgia (disorder causing muscle pain and stiffness) Ex. milnacipran
  • other medicines used to manage schizophrenia Ex. zotepine
  • medicine used to manage anxiety Ex. lorazepam
  • medicines used as muscle relaxants Ex. carisoprodol, cyclobenzaprine
  • medicines used to manage insomnia (Ex. temazepam, triazolam)
  • medicines used to manage allergies (Ex. cetirizine, desloratadine)
  • belladonna (herbal medicine used to relieve pain and reduce inflammation)
  • betel nut (herbal medicine used to remove phlegm, subdue bad odours)

Overdosage:

If you or anyone else accidentally takes too much of LOXAPAC 25MG, consult your doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital. Symptoms of overdose are low blood pressure, respiratory depression, unconsciousness, extrapyramidal symptoms (such as muscle stiffness, body spasms, upward eyerolling, exaggeration of reflexes, drooling, difficulty in moving body), fits, renal failure, agitation, confusion, drowsiness, dizziness, muscle stiffness/twitching, increased salivation, trouble swallowing, weakness, loss of balance or coordination, weak pulse, slow heart rate, weak or shallow breathing, and fainting.
