Introduction About GLUCOBAY M 25MG TABLET

GLUCOBAY M 25MG TABLET is used to manage type 2 diabetes mellitus in patients who have not sufficiently responded to either diet and exercise alone or after a combination of diet and exercise with other single oral antidiabetic medicines. It is a combination of Acarbose and Metformin which belongs to the group of medicines called Antidiabetic agents.

GLUCOBAY M 25MG TABLET is not recommended for patients with ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease, severe liver disorders, kidney diseases, hernias, intestinal diseases, gastric diseases, type-1 diabetes, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, weight loss, dehydration, severe infections in the lungs or kidney, acute or chronic metabolic acidosis, diabetic ketoacidosis, acute heart failure, or heart attack. Inform your doctor before any x-ray or scanning and if there are any pre-planned surgeries.

If you are a pregnant or a breastfeeding women, consult your doctor before taking the medicine. It is not recommended in children less than 16 years of age. The common side effects are flatulence, diarrhoea, stomach pain, upset stomach, loss of appetite, and changes in taste. Consult your doctor if any of your symptoms get worse or persist.

How GLUCOBAY M 25MG TABLET Works

GLUCOBAY M 25MG TABLET contains Acarbose and Metformin. Acarbose works by inhibiting the action of enzymes involved in the digestion of carbohydrates and sugars, thereby delaying the digestion of carbohydrates complex (sugars) and lowering blood sugar levels. Metformin reduces the amount of sugar that the liver releases into the blood and gives a better response to insulin. This is the major action responsible for lowering blood glucose levels.  

How to use GLUCOBAY M 25MG TABLET

  • Take GLUCOBAY M 25MG TABLET as directed by your physician
  • Swallow the medicine with a glass of water, and do not crush or chew the medicine
  • It is better to take the medicine with food to avoid stomach disorders and take this medicine at the same time every day
  • Your doctor will decide the correct dose of the medicine for you depending upon your condition

Side Effects Of GLUCOBAY M 25MG TABLET

Common side effects of GLUCOBAY M 25MG TABLET:

  • digestive problems
  • diarrhoea
  • loss of appetite
  • changes in taste
  • flatulence
  • rumbling in the stomach
  • feeling of fullness (bloating)

Stop taking this medicine and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:

  • accumulation of lactic acid in the blood (lactic acidosis)
  • weakness, tiredness, muscle pain, trouble breathing, stomach pain, nausea
    and vomiting, diarrhoea chillness in arms and legs, dizziness or light-headed, irregular
    heartbeat
  • tiredness, loss of appetite, weight loss, yellowing of the skin or eyes
  • fatigue, headache, muscle cramps and weakness

Allergy

There is no proper information regarding the use of this medicine in patients with lung diseases. It should be used with caution in patients with lung diseases.

GLUCOBAY M 25MG TABLET is not recommended for use in children (below 18 years of age).

GLUCOBAY M 25MG TABLET should be used with caution in elderly people.  

Others

GLUCOBAY M 25MG TABLET is not recommended for use if you:

  • have gastrointestinal disorders like ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease, severe liver disorder, kidney diseases, hernia, intestinal diseases, gastric diseases
  • have Type-1 diabetes
  • have acute or chronic metabolic acidosis
  • have diabetic ketoacidosis

Before taking the medicine, inform your doctor if you undergo,

  • any x-ray or scanning and if there are any pre-planned surgeries

Interactions

A. Drug-Drug interactions:

Before GLUCOBAY M 25MG TABLET, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines:

  • Diuretics (Ex. furosemide)
  • NSAID and COX-2-inhibitors (Ex. ibuprofen, celecoxib)
  • ACE inhibitors and angiotensin II receptor antagonists (Ex. enalapril, ramipril, valsartan, losartan, verapamil)
  • Bronchodilators (Ex. salbutamol, terbutaline)
  • corticosteroids (Ex. prednisolone)
  • Antibiotics (Ex. neomycin, vancomycin trimethoprim)
  • H2 blockers (Ex. cimetidine)
  • Anti-viral agents (Ex. Dolutegravir)
  • Anti-anginals (Ex. ranolazine, acetazolamide)
  • Cardiac glycosides (Ex. digoxin)
  • Anti-cancer agents (Ex. crizotinib, olaparib)
  • Anti-fungal (Ex. isavuconazole)
  • Anti-diabetics (Ex. insulin and rosiglitazone)
  • Birth control pills (Ex. estragon, progesterone)
  • Sympathomimetics (Ex. phenylpropanolamine)
  • Hormones (Ex. thyroxine)
  • Anticonvulsants (Ex. phenytoin, topiramate, zonisamide)
  • Bile acid sequestrants (Ex. nicotinic acid, colestyramine)
  • Anti-TB agents (Ex. isoniazid, rifampicin)
  • Opiate (narcotic) analgesics (Ex. Morphine)
  • Class 1A anti-arrhythmics (Ex. procainamide, quinidine, and quinine)
  • Anticoagulants (Ex. warfarin)
  • Intestinal absorbents (Ex. charcoal)
  • Digestive enzymes (Ex. amylase and lipase)
  • X-rays (Ex. iodine)

B. Interaction with food or drink:

  • Foods containing cane sugar should be avoided as it may cause stomach discomfort and diarrhoea

Overdosage:

If you or anyone else accidentally took too much of GLUCOBAY M 25MG TABLET, consult your doctor immediately. Symptoms of overdose include stomach discomfort, nausea, vomiting drowsiness, weakness, dizziness, malaise, headache, and flatulence. Lactic acidosis and hypoglycaemia have also been reported.
