INTRODUCTION

FEMOSTON CONTI is a combination of Dydrogesterone and Estradiol which belongs to the group of medicines called Hormone Replacement Therapy. It is used among postmenopausal women to relive menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes, sleep problems, irritability, or depression.

It can also be used to prevent osteoporosis (bone loss and fragility) among postmenopausal women who are at risk of developing fractures easily. FEMOSTON CONTI should be used only in women who do not have their period at least for the past 6 months.

Estradiol and dydrogesterone are synthetic derivative of female sex hormones (oestrogen and progesterone). They supplement our body with sufficient levels of female sex hormones which improves postmenopausal symptoms.

FEMOSTON CONTI is not a contraceptive (birth control pill), therefore it cannot prevent you from becoming pregnant. Your doctor will instruct you to have periodic blood tests and regular physical examination (breast examination) to avoid the risk of unwanted side effects.

Do not take FEMOSTON CONTI if you have or previously had breast cancer, uterine cancer, unexplained vaginal bleeding, heart problems or blood clots. Before taking FEMOSTON CONTI inform your doctor if you have any liver or kidney problems, diabetes, asthma, or epilepsy.

FEMOSTON CONTI is not intended for use in pregnant and breastfeeding women. It should be used with caution in women aged above 65 years. The most common side effects of taking FEMOSTON CONTI are stomach pain, back pain, breast pain or tenderness, headache, vaginal infection, or vaginal discharge. Consult your doctor if any of these side effect worsens. Also, inform your doctor if you experience any changes in your breast such as breast pain, tenderness, discharge from the nipple, or lump growth in the breasts.

It is used in postmenopausal women to:

HOW FEMOSTON CONTI WORKS

FEMOSTON CONTI supplements our body with sufficient levels of female sex hormones (estrogen and progesterone). This helps in manageing problems associated with hormonal deficiency states such as menopause. As a result, it provides relief from postmenopausal symptoms such as hot flushes, sleep problems, irritability, depression and bone loss.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

Take FEMOSTON CONTI strictly as advised by your physician. Swallow FEMOSTON CONTI with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew the medicine. Try to take FEMOSTON CONTI at the same time each day.

Do not miss any dose of FEMOSTON CONTI in between the therapy, as it may reduce its effectiveness. In case if you have missed a dose of FEMOSTON CONTI take it as soon as you remember. Avoid taking a double dose of FEMOSTON CONTI to compensate the missed dose it may lead to bleeding or spotting. Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration of FEMOSTON CONTI for you depending upon your age, body weight and disease condition.

Stop taking FEMOSTON CONTI and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:

  • allergic reactions (such as skin rash, itching, swelling of the skin around the face and neck, difficulty to breath or swallow)
  • heart attack
  • tumours that interact the levels of progestogens (Ex. meningioma)
  • heavy, abnormal, painful vaginal bleeding, irregular or prolonged bleeding (for more than 6 months)
  • sings of liver disease such as yellowing of your skin or the whites of your eyes (jaundice)
  • rise in blood pressure (symptoms include headache, tiredness, dizziness)
  • migraine or severe headache
  • blood clot (symptoms include painful swelling, redness of the legs, sudden chest pain, difficulty in breathing)
  • signs of breast cancer (such as breast pain or discharge, skin dimpling, changes in the nipple, or formation of lump in breast)
  • skin disorders like chloasma (discolouration of skin in the face and neck), erythema nodosum (painful reddish patches on skin), erythema multiforme (skin rash with reddish colour and sores)

HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS

Nausea or vomiting:

Drink clear or ice-cold drinks. Eat light, bland foods. Avoid fried, greasy, or sweet foods. Eat slowly and eat smaller, more frequent meals, drinking gradually larger amounts of clear liquids, avoid solid food until the vomiting episode has passed, take rest. Consult your doctor if nausea worsen.

Headache:

Rest and relax. Keep yourself hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids such as water or electrolytes. Applying a pain-relieving balm on your forehead can be beneficial. Do not consume excessive alcohol, as it could aggravate your headache. Consult your doctor if your headache worsens.

Dizziness:

Try to rest and relax. Get enough sleep. Avoid driving or operating any tools or machines completely while you are feeling dizzy. Do not consume excessive alcohol, as it could aggravate your dizziness. Consult your doctor if your dizziness worsens.

BREASTFEEDING

DRIVING AND USING MACHINES

Do not drive or handle heavy machines if you experience dizziness, drowsiness, tiredness, or blurred vision after taking FEMOSTON CONTI.

ALCOHOL

Avoid consumption of alcohol while taking FEMOSTON CONTI.

KIDNEY

FEMOSTON CONTI should be used with caution in patients with kidney diseases. Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.

LIVER

FEMOSTON CONTI is not recommended for use in patients who have or ever had liver diseases. It should be used with caution in patients with gall stones or benign liver tumour. Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.

ALLERGY

Do not take FEMOSTON CONTI if you are allergic to estradiol or dydrogesterone.

LUNGS

FEMOSTON CONTI should be used with caution in patients with asthma. Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.

HEART DISEASE

FEMOSTON CONTI is not recommended for use in patients with heart diseases (such as heart attack, stroke or angina). Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.

OTHERS

FEMOSTON CONTI is not recommended if you have:

  • or previously had breast cancer
  • cancer in the uterus lining (endometrium), or if you are suspected of having it
  • unexplained vaginal bleeding
  • unmanageed endometrial hyperplasia (excessive thickening of the layer of uterus)
  • or had blood clot in a vein (thrombosis, deep venous thrombosis, pulmonary embolism)
  • blood clotting disorder (such as Protein C, Protein S, antithrombin deficiency)
  • porphyria (inherited disorder affecting RBC)
  • meningioma (brain tumour affected by the levels of progestogens

Before taking FEMOSTON CONTI inform your doctor if you have:

  • fibroids (tumours growth in uterus)
  • endometriosis (a condition where inner lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus)
  • or had family history of breast cancer
  • diabetes
  • migraine or severe headaches (a neurological disease with symptoms of severe headache)
  • or ever had systemic lupus erythematosus (a serious disease in which immune system attacks its own body)
  • or ever had epilepsy
  • fluid retention
  • premature menopause
  • any blood tests to be done
  • or ever had hereditary and acquired angioedema
  • or ever had otosclerosis (disease affecting the eardrum and hearing)
  • any upcoming surgery

Use in paediatrics:

FEMOSTON CONTI is generally not recommended for use in children and adolescents (aged below 18 years of age). Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.

Use in geriatrics:

FEMOSTON CONTI should be used with caution in elderly patients. Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.

INTERACTIONS

A. Drug - Drug interactions:

Before taking FEMOSTON CONTI, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines such as:

  • medicines used to manage epilepsy (Ex. phenobarbital, phenytoin, and carbamazepine)
  • medicines used to manage tuberculosis (Ex. rifampicin and rifabutin)
  • medicines used to manage HIV infection (Ex. nevirapine, efavirenz, ritonavir and nelfinavir)
  • St John’s Wort (an herbal medicine used to manage mental illness)
  • medicines used to manage Hepatitis C viral infection (Ex. ombitasvir, paritaprevir, ritonavir, dasabuvir, glecaprevir/pibrentasvir)
  • tacrolimus and cyclosporin (a medicine used to suppress immune function and to prevent graft rejection)
  • fentanyl (a medicine used for pain relief)
  • theophylline (a medicine used for asthma and other breathing problems)

Overdosage:

If you or anyone else accidentally took more FEMOSTON CONTI, consult your doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital. Symptoms of overdose might include nausea, vomiting, breast tenderness, dizziness, stomach pain, drowsiness, or menstrual bleeding.

Women aged below 50 years must use suitable contraceptive method to avoid pregnancy while taking FEMOSTON CONTI.

Can FEMOSTON CONTI be used as a contraceptive?

No. FEMOSTON CONTI is not a contraceptive (birth control pill) and therefore necessary safety measures must be followed to avoid pregnancy. If it is less than 12 months since your last menstrual period and you are under 50 years of age, you may still need to use additional contraception to prevent pregnancy. However, consult your doctor if you’re bleeding or spotting appears after some time on therapy, or continue to happen even after stop taking FEMOSTON CONTI.

Can FEMOSTON CONTI cause memory loss?
