What EXPAVON is used for?

  • It is used to restore the blood volume when you have lost blood when other products called crystalloids are not considered sufficient alone

  • are allergic to Hydroxyethyl starch or any of the other ingredients of this medicine
  • have kidney impairment or receive dialysis
  • suffer from bleeding in the brain (intracranial or cerebral bleeding)
  • are dehydrated
  • have severely impaired liver function
  • have severe heart failure
  • have severe problems with your blood clotting
  • have received an organ transplant
  • have problems with your heart or circulation
  • have blood clotting (coagulation) disorders
  • have problems with your kidneys
  • plan for surgery and trauma
  • have problems with your lungs or with your heart or circulation
  • are undergoing open heart surgery
  • If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor for advice before taking this medicine
  • Ask your doctor for advice before giving this medicine to your children
  • After having EXPAVON your ability to drive a car or operate machinery will not be affected

Tell your doctor if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription.

  • EXPAVON given by doctor or nurse
  • You will receive this medicine by infusion into a vein (intravenous drip)

If you take more EXPAVON

  • If you receive too much of EXPAVON your circulatory system can get overloaded, which can result e.g. in water retention in your lungs (lung edema)

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
