What is ELTOCIN?
- ELTOCIN contains Erythromycin which belongs to a group of medicines called macrolide antibiotics
What ELTOCIN is used for?
It is used to manage or prevent:
- bacterial infections, including sexually transmitted diseases and dental infections
- whooping cough, diphtheria or to manage certain skin infections (Acne vulgaris)

Talk to your Doctor, if you:
- are allergic or hypersensitive to erythromycin or any of the other ingredients of this medicine
- have any liver problems
- have a sexually transmitted disease called syphilis
- suffer from a condition called myasthenia gravis
- If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor for advice before taking this medicine
- Your doctor will give the right dose based on your child’s age and disease
Tell your doctor if you are taking,
- ergotamine or dihydroergotamine (used to manage migraines)
- terfenadine or astemizole or mizolastine (widely taken for hay fever and allergies)
- cisapride (for stomach disorders)
- simvastatin, lovastatin (used to lower cholesterol and triglycerides (types of fat) in the blood)
- tolterodine (used for manageing overactive bladder with symptoms of urinary frequency, urgency and leakage)
- colchicine (used for management of gout and arthritis)
- protease inhibitors (used to manage viral infections e.g. saquinavir)
- oral contraceptives
- cimetidine and omeprazole (used to manage acid reflux)
- clarithromycin, rifabutin, or rifampicin (used to manage different types of bacterial infection)
- fluconazole, ketoconazole and itraconazole (used to manage fungal infections)
- digoxin, quinidine or disopyramide (used to manage heart problems)
- cilostazol (a medicine used to manage peripheral circulation problems)
- hexobarbitone, phenobarbital or midazolam (used as sedatives)
- warfarin and acenocoumarol (used to help thin the blood)
- valproate, carbamazepine or phenytoin (used to control epilepsy)
- theophylline (used to manage asthma and other breathing problems)
- ciclosporin or tacrolimus (used following organ transplants)
- bromocriptine (used to manage Parkinson’s disease)
- alfentanil (a medicine used to provide pain relief)
- methylprednisolone (used to help suppress the body's immune system)
- verapamil (used to manage high blood pressure and chest pain)
- vinblastine (used to manage certain types of cancer)
- sildenafil (used to manage erectile dysfunction)
- Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you
- Shake well before use
If you take more ELTOCIN
- If you accidentally take more medicine in one day than your doctor has told you to, or if a child has taken some of the medicine by mistake, contact your doctor or go to your nearest hospital immediately
- Symptoms of overdosage are: temporary hearing loss, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea
If you forget to take ELTOCIN
- Take the dose as soon as you remember, unless it is nearly time for your next dose. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed dose
If you stop taking ELTOCIN
- Do not stop taking this medicine unless your doctor tells you to do so
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
- serious skin reaction: a red, scaly rash with bumps under the skin and blisters (exanthematous pustulosis)
- difficulty breathing
- fainting
- swelling of the face, lips or throat
- ulcers in the mouth or throat
- diarrhoea which may be severe or prolonged and may contain blood or mucus;
- nausea, vomiting
- increase in a particular type of white blood cells (eosinophilia)
- stomach pains (these may be a symptom of an inflammed pancreas (pancreatitis))
- ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
- reversible loss of hearing (usually associated with high doses or in patients with kidney problems)
- various liver or gall-bladder problems, which can cause yellowing of the skin and/or eyes (jaundice) or pale stools with dark urine
- chest pains
- abnormal heart rhythms (including palpitations)
- fever, anorexia
- confusion, hallucinations, fits (seizures)
- vertigo (problems with balance that can result in feelings of dizziness or sickness)
- inflammation of the kidneys (a condition known as interstitial nephritis)
- low blood pressure
- serious skin rashes that may involve blistering and can cover large areas of the torso, face and limbs
- vomiting and irritability
- visual impairment/blurred vision (Mitochondrial optic neuropathy)
- Keep this medicine out of reach of children
- Store at a room temperature of 15-25°C
