Introduction About CYCLOBION 1% OPHTHALMIC SOLUTION

CYCLOBION 1% OPHTHALMIC SOLUTION contains Cyclopentolate which belongs to the group of medicines called Mydriatic agents. It is used to dilate the pupil of the eye and to paralyse the lens temporarily for performing an eye examination or for preparing the eye for an operation. It is also used to manage uveitis (inflammation of middle layer of the eye tissues) and iritis (inflammation of coloured ring around the pupil of the eye).

CYCLOBION 1% OPHTHALMIC SOLUTION is not recommended for use in patients with glaucoma and paralysis of the intestine. CYCLOBION 1% OPHTHALMIC SOLUTION should be used with caution in patients with heart diseases (such as heart attack, heart failure or angina), enlarged prostate in men, history of ataxia and inflamed or red eyes. CYCLOBION 1% OPHTHALMIC SOLUTION is not recommended for use in pregnant and breastfeeding women, unless advised by your doctor.    

CYCLOBION 1% OPHTHALMIC SOLUTION is not recommended for use in new-born babies (less than 28 days old) unless recommended by the doctor and in children with brain damage, particularly if they may have fits and it is not recommended for use in elderly patients with high pressure inside the eye.

The most common side effects of using CYCLOBION 1% OPHTHALMIC SOLUTION are eye irritation, stinging sensation, fever, confusion, facial flushing, decreased movement of the gastrointestinal tract or slower transit of food and constipation. Consult your doctor if any of the side effect gets worsen or bothers you.

  • Dilates the pupil of the eye and to paralyse the lens temporarily (for performing an eye examination or for preparing the eye for an operation)
  • Manage certain types of eye inflammation (uveitis and iritis)

How CYCLOBION 1% OPHTHALMIC SOLUTION Works

CYCLOBION 1% OPHTHALMIC SOLUTION works by blocking the action of acetylcholine to produce relaxation of the sphincter muscle of the iris resulting in dilation of the pupil (mydriasis) and manages the eye from accommodating for near vision (cycloplegia). Therefore, helpful in performing eye examination or eye operation.  

How to use CYCLOBION 1% OPHTHALMIC SOLUTION

Use CYCLOBION 1% OPHTHALMIC SOLUTION as advised by your physician. It is for ophthalmic use only. Wash your hands before and after application. Tilt your head slightly backwards and instil a few drops of the medicine into the affected eye. Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration for you depending upon your age and severity of the condition.

Side Effects Of CYCLOBION 1% OPHTHALMIC SOLUTION

Common

  • eye irritation, stinging sensation
  • fever
  • confusion
  • facial flushing
  • decreased movement of the gastrointestinal tract or slower transit of food

Rare

  • allergic reaction

Stop using CYCLOBION 1% OPHTHALMIC SOLUTION and contact your physician immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:

  • abnormal heart rate 
  • difficulty in passing urine (urinary retention)
  • hallucinations, mental disturbances
  • symptoms of severe allergic reaction/anaphylactic shock (such as severe skin rash, swelling of the face, lips, throat or tongue causing difficulty breathing or swallowing)
  • seizures or fits, difficult speaking or speaking in a nonsensible way (in infant or children)
  • loss of consciousness affecting breathing, heart rate and blood pressure (in infant or children)

How To Manage Side Effects

Constipation

Eat plenty of fiber rich foods such as fresh fruits, vegetables, and cereals and drink plenty of water. Exercise more regularly (such as daily walk). Consult your doctor if the symptom does not improve.

Skin rash Or Itching

Avoid hot showers as it can irritate the skin further. Do not scratch the affected area. Use sunscreen and protective clothing when going outdoors. Regularly use unscented moisturizers to soothe and hydrate the affected area after consulting the doctor. If the symptom does not improve consult your doctor.

Allergy

Contraindicated

Do not use CYCLOBION 1% OPHTHALMIC SOLUTION if you are allergic to cyclopentolate or benzalkonium chloride or to any other ingredients of this medicine. Inform your doctor if you are sensitive to belladonna alkaloids (drugs such as atropine) before using CYCLOBION 1% OPHTHALMIC SOLUTION.

  • enlarged prostate

  • history of ataxia (condition that causes coordination problems and unsteadiness)
  • inflamed or red eyes

Interactions

A. Drug-Drug interactions:

Before using CYCLOBION 1% OPHTHALMIC SOLUTION, inform your doctor if you are using or taking any of the following medicines:

  • ophthalmic cholinesterase inhibitors Ex. physostigmine, pilocarpine, carbachol (medicines used for glaucoma)
  • antihistamines such as fexofenadine, cetirizine (used to manage allergy symptoms)
  • amantadine (medicine used for parkinson’s disease and influenza A infection)
  • anti-psychotics (used to manage schizophrenia and bipolar disorder) such as butyrophenones (Ex. haloperidol) and phenothiazine (Ex. chlorpromazine, fluphenazine)
  • tricyclic anti-depressants (used to manage depression) such as amitriptyline, lofepramine and trimipramine

Overdosage:

If you or anyone else accidentally use too much of CYCLOBION 1% OPHTHALMIC SOLUTION, consult your doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital. Symptoms of overdosage are increased intraocular pressure, reduced GI motility, decreased salivary, sweat glands, bronchial, pharynx, and nasal secretions, behavioural disturbances, high fever, increased heart rate, high blood pressure, vasodilation and urinary retention.
