B-complex vitamins and vitamin C work as cofactors for a variety of enzymes that control carbohydrate, protein and fat metabolism. Thiamine (B1) is a cofactor in the decarboxylation of keto acids such as pyruvic acid. Riboflavin (B2), in conjunction with niacinamide, is essential in cellular respiratory responses.
Pyridoxine (B6) is involved in amino acid decarboxylation and interconversion. It is also essential for normal antibody-mediated and cell-mediated immune responses. D-panthenol acts as a cofactor for enzymes involved in acetyl group transfer. It is also necessary for appropriate antibody response when combined with pyridoxine. Ascorbic acid (vitamin C) participates in oxidative metabolic events such as collagen production and the conversion of folic acid to folinic acid. It is also required for appropriate WBC (white blood cell) phagocytic activity. B-complex vitamins and vitamin C is also required for the optimum function of various cells and tissues.
