Introduction About AMIFRU 5/40MG TABLET

AMIFRU 5/40MG TABLET is a combination of Amiloride and Furosemide which belongs to the group of medicines called Diuretics. It is used in the management of extra build-up of water in the body. Symptoms include swollen ankles, feeling more tired than usual and shortness of breath. 

AMIFRU 5/40MG TABLET is not recommended for use in patients with severe kidney and liver problems, low blood volume or dehydration problem, not passing any urine, addison’s disease (which makes you feel weak and tired).

AMIFRU 5/40MG TABLET should be used with caution in patients with diabetes, low blood pressure, prostate problems, gout, systemic lupus erythematosus and if you are scheduled for a glucose test.

AMIFRU 5/40MG TABLET is not recommended for use in pregnant and breastfeeding women. Also, it is not recommended for use in children and adolescents (below 18 years of age). It should be used with caution in elderly patients (aged 65 years and above) particularly those with dementia or other conditions which may increase the risk of low blood pressure.

The most common side effects of taking AMIFRU 5/40MG TABLET are diarrhoea, constipation, loss of appetite, stomach pain, weakness and headache. Consult your doctor if any of the side effects worsen.

How AMIFRU 5/40MG TABLET Works

AMIFRU 5/40MG TABLET effectively stops extra build-up of water in the body by acting on different parts of the kidney and promoting water excretion. It inhibits certain system (sodium-potassium-chloride cotransporters) which results in increased excretion of water with some salts. AMIFRU 5/40MG TABLET also has a potassium-sparring effect and reduces the amount of potassium excretion from the body.

How to use AMIFRU 5/40MG TABLET

Take AMIFRU 5/40MG TABLET as advised by your doctor. Swallow the medicine with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew the medicine. Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration for you depending upon your age, body weight and disease condition.

  • nausea, vomiting, stomach pain

  • severe allergic reactions (signs include shock such as difficulty in breathing, cold clammy skin, pale skin colour and racing heartbeat)
  • severe stomach or back pain (signs of pancreatitis)
  • bruising more easily, getting more infections, feeling weak or tired more than usual
  • dehydration or body chemical changes (signs include increased thirst, headache, feeling dizzy or light-headed, fainting, confusion, muscle or joint pains or weakness, cramps or spasms, stomach upsets or uneven heartbeats)
  • signs of liver problems (yellowing of the skin or eyes and dark urine) and in severe cases it may cause liver encephalopathy symptoms to include forgetfulness, fits, mood changes and coma
  • inflammation of the kidney (signs include swollen ankles or high blood pressure)
  • stevens-johnson syndrome (signs include Blistering or peeling of the skin around the lips, eyes, mouth, nose and genitals, flu-like symptoms and fever)
  • epidermal necrolysis (signs include skin layer may peel off to leave large areas of raw exposed skin all over the body)
  • acute generalised exanthematous pustulosis (signs include skin becoming red with swollen areas covered in numerous small pustules)
  • dizziness, fainting and loss of consciousness

How To Manage Side Effects

Nausea or vomiting:

Take this medicine with or just after meals. Stick to simple meals. Avoid eating oil-rich, fried or spicy foods. Do not lie down or sleep immediately after eating. Consult your doctor if your symptom does not improve. 

Constipation:

Eat plenty of fibre-rich foods such as vegetables, fresh fruits, cereals and drink plenty of water. Exercise more regularly. Consult your doctor if your symptom does not improve.

Diarrhoea:

Drink lot of fluids such as water, squash or fruit juice to keep yourself hydrated. Do not take any medicine on your own for managing diarrhoea without consulting your doctor. Consult your doctor if your symptom does not improve.

Headache:

Try to take rest and don’t involve yourself in exertive activities. Apply a pain-relieving balm on your forehead if required. Consult your doctor if your symptom does not improve.

AMIFRU 5/40MG TABLET is not recommended for use in patients having severe kidney disease. It should be used with caution in patients with kidney problems. Consult your doctor before taking AMIFRU 5/40MG TABLET.

Liver

AMIFRU 5/40MG TABLET is not recommended for use in patients having severe liver problems. It should be used with caution in patients with liver problems. Consult your doctor before taking AMIFRU 5/40MG TABLET.

Allergy

Do not take AMIFRU 5/40MG TABLET if you are allergic to Amiloride, Furosemide or sulphonamides such as sulfadiazine or co-trimoxazole.

Others

AMIFRU 5/40MG TABLET is not recommended for use if you:

  • have a low volume of blood
  • are dehydrated
  • are unable to pass urine
  • have increased or decreased potassium or sodium levels in the blood
  • have Addison’s disease

Before taking AMIFRU 5/40MG TABLET, inform your doctor if you:

  • have difficulty in passing urine
  • have diabetes
  • have low blood pressure or feel dizzy when standing up
  • have gout
  • have prostate problems
  • are dizzy or dehydrated (due to water loss in the body)
  • have systemic lupus erythematosus
  • are going to have a glucose test

Use in pediatrics:

AMIFRU 5/40MG TABLET is not recommended for use in children and adolescents (aged less than 18 years). Consult your child’s doctor for advice.

Use in geriatrics:

AMIFRU 5/40MG TABLET should be used with caution in elderly patients (aged 65 years and above) particularly those with dementia or other conditions which may increase the risk of low blood pressure. Consult your doctor before taking AMIFRU 5/40MG TABLET.

Interactions

A. Drug – Drug Interactions:

Before taking AMIFRU 5/40MG TABLET inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines:

  • medicines which change the amount of potassium in your blood (Ex. potassium chloride, triamterene)
  • medicines used to manage high blood pressure or other heart problems (Ex. ramipril, enalapril, perindopril, losartan, digoxin, candesartan, irbesartan and bendroflumethiazide)
  • medicines used to relax your muscles during surgery (Ex. propofol, ketamine)
  • medicines used in the management of diabetes (Ex. metformin, sitagliptin)
  • medicines used for wheezing or difficulty in breathing (Ex. theophylline), asthma (Ex. salbutamol, salmeterol, formoterol, bambuterol, terbutaline sulphate)
  • medicines used the management of epilepsy (Ex. phenytoin, carbamazepine)
  • medicines used to manage mental illness (Ex. lithium), manage depression (Ex. reboxetine)

  • medicine used in cough medicines (Ex. liquorice)
  • medicines used to gout (Ex. probenecid)
  • medicines used to manage bacterial infections (Ex. gentamicin, amikacin, netilmicin, tobramycin, neomycin, vancomycin, cefixime, cefpodoxime)
  • medicines used as injections before Xray examination (Ex. barium, iodine)
  • medicines used for constipation (Ex. bisacodyl, senna)

Overdosage:

If you or anyone else accidentally take too much of AMIFRU 5/40MG TABLET, consult your doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital. Overdose symptoms of AMIFRU 5/40MG TABLET includes dry mouth, feeling thirsty, muscle pain or cramps, nausea, vomiting, weak or uneven heartbeat, feeling dizzy, weak or sleepy.
