Terlipressin is used for the treatment of bleeding oesophageal varices (bleeding from dilated veins in the food pipe leading to your stomach).

How Terlipressin works

Terlipressin reduces bleeding by releasing substance called lysine vasopressin that acts on the walls of the blood vessels and constricts them, thus decreasing the blood flow to the affected veins.

Common side effects of Terlipressin

• very slow heart rate, high or low blood pressure
• insufficient blood supply in arms, legs and skin
• paleness of face or skin
• headache
• temporary stomach cramps or diarrhoea
• abdominal cramps in women

• in case of accidental overdosage
• if you experience severe breathlessness due to an asthma attack
• if you experience severe trouble with or stopping breathing
• if you experience severe pain in the chest, severe and persistent irregular heartbeats
• if you experience locally dead skin (necrosis)
• if you experience convulsions (fits)
• if you experience signs of kidney failure
