Pimecrolimus is used to treat atopic dermatitis (eczema). Eczema is an inflammatory condition of the skin characterized by red and itchy rashes. Allergies are the main common cause of eczema. Symptoms include dry skin, severe itching, redness of hands, feet, ankles, wrist, and neck, etc.

How Pimecrolimus works

Pimecrolimus is an immunosuppresant is a calcineurin inhibitor. It works by blocking calcineurin (a protein in our bodies that helps to activate our immune system). By blocking the immune response it lessens the inflammation which is caused by eczema (red itchy rashes) or other allergies.

• warm feeling at the application site
• discomfort, burning sensation, stinging, soreness, irritation, itching or reddening of the skin (of the particular area where the medicine is applied)
• skin infections (such as folliculitis)

• In case of accidental overdosage
• If you experience angioedema (signs include hives (urticaria), itching, red marks on the hands, feet and throat, swelling of the throat and tongue, swelling around the eyes and lips and difficulty breathing and swallowing)

• Take pimecrolimus exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. Follow the recommended dosage, frequency, and duration of use
• Before applying pimecrolimus, make sure the affected skin area is clean and dry. Gently wash and pat the area dry before applying the medication
• Apply a thin layer of pimecrolimus to the affected skin areas. Gently rub it in until it disappears. Avoid using excessive amounts of the medication
• After applying the medication, wash your hands thoroughly to avoid inadvertently spreading it to other areas of your body or to other people
• Be cautious to avoid contact with your eyes, nose, mouth, or mucous membranes. If accidental contact occurs, rinse the affected area with water immediately
• Pimecrolimus can increase the skin's sensitivity to sunlight, so it's important to protect treated areas from sun exposure. Use protective clothing and sunscreen when going outdoors
• In some cases, it's recommended to use a moisturizer in conjunction with pimecrolimus to help keep the skin hydrated. Consult your healthcare provider or pharmacist for recommendations
• If you're experiencing skin issues, alcohol and tobacco use might worsen your condition. It's generally advisable to minimize or avoid these substances
