Uses of Oxybutynin

Oxybutynin is used in adults and children (over 5 years) to treat urinary incontinence (loss of control in passing urine) and increased urgency to pass urine. In children 5 years or older it is also used to treat nighttime bedwetting, when other treatments have not worked.

Therapeutic Category

Oxybutynin: Anticholinergics

How Oxybutynin works

Oxybutynin works by relaxing the muscles of the bladder and stops sudden muscle contractions (spasms). This helps in controlling release of urine.

Common side effects of Oxybutynin

  • constipation
  • dry mouth
  • nausea and vomiting
  • headache, dizziness, feeling sleepy
  • blurred vision
  • dry skin and dry eyes
  • diarrhea
  • confusion
  • difficulty passing urine
  • face flushing (reddening)

When to consult your doctor

Consult your doctor:

  • If you experience swelling of the deeper layers of the skin caused by a build-up of fluid (angioedema)
  • In case of accidental overdosage

Health Tips for Oxybutynin

  • Drink plenty of water while taking oxybutynin. This will help reduce the risk of dry mouth and other side effects
  • Avoid drinking alcohol while taking oxybutynin. Alcohol can increase the risk of impulsive behaviour and make adverse effects more likely
  • Monitor your blood sugar levels closely if you are diabetic and taking oxybutynin
