Nicergoline works by inhibiting postsynaptic alpha-1 adrenoceptors (molecules found on vascular smooth muscle) which results in peripheral vasodilation (widening of blood vessels) thus improving blood flow to the brain and preventing the occurrence of symptoms associated with cerebrovascular insufficiency, cognitive and vascular disorders including dementia in affected individuals.
