Uses of Neostigmine
Neostigmine is used for the treatment of myasthenia gravis. It is also used to reverse the effects of muscle relaxants, normalise intestinal movements and treat urinary retention after surgery.

How Neostigmine works
Neostigmine increases muscle strength by blocking the action of an enzyme in the body which blocks nerve impulses to muscles. By stopping this enzyme from working, it strengthens muscles and thus helps in easing of intestinal movements and urinary retention.
Common side effects of Neostigmine
- Increased or decreased heart rate, low blood pressure
- Dry mouth, nausea, vomiting
- Throat pain, procedural complication or pain
- Dizziness, headache, postoperative shivering, prolonged neuromuscular blockade causing paralysis of the affected skeletal muscles
- Difficulty in sleeping
- Difficulty in breathing
- Pruritus (itchy skin)
