Uses of Mifepristone

Mifepristone is used for medical termination of pregnancy. It is used as an emergency contraceptive to prevent pregnancy in women after an unprotected sexual intercourse. It is typically used in women who have not crossed more than 63 days from the date of last menstrual period (first day of menses of the previous month). It can also be combined with other abortion pills or with prostaglandin therapy to facilitate the process of abortion.

How Mifepristone works

Mifepristone is an abortion pill. It works by blocking the actions of a female sex hormone called progesterone which is responsible for sustaining pregnancy. This causes shedding of the uterine layers which makes it more difficult for the foetus to implant and grow. It also increases the levels of certain chemicals (prostaglandins) in the uterus that can disrupt the uterine membranes, leading to abortion.
