How Metformin works
Metformin is an antidiabetic medicine. It makes the body more sensitive to insulin (a hormone involved in glucose metabolism). This helps our body cells to utilize more amount of the circulating blood glucose, thereby reducing blood sugar levels. Additionally, it also prevents glucose production by the liver and reduces its absoprtion in the body.

Consult your doctor:
- In case of accidental overdosage
- If you experience serious allergic reaction (such as hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat causing difficulty in breathing or swallowing)
- If you experience signs of liver problems (such as nausea or vomiting, stomach pain, unusual or unexplained tiredness, loss of appetite, dark urine, yellowing of the skin or the whites of the eyes)
- If you experience signs of lactic acidosis (cold hands or feet, dizziness or light-headedness, slow or irregular heartbeat, weakness or tiredness, unusual muscle pain, trouble breathing, sleepiness or drowsiness, stomach pains, nausea or vomiting)

- Maintain a balanced and nutritious diet. Consume entire foods such as vegetables, fruits, lean meats, and whole grains. Processed foods, sugary snacks and beverages, and foods high in saturated and trans fats should be avoided. Avoid skipping meals. It is important to eat regular meals while taking this medicine to reduce the risk of low blood glucose levels
- Regular physical activity will help you control your blood sugar levels, enhance your insulin sensitivity, and maintain a healthy weight. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise per week, as well as strength training twice a week
- Limit your alcohol consumption or avoid it entirely. Alcohol may impair blood sugar management and interact with metformin. Discuss with your doctor whether moderate alcohol consumption is appropriate for you
- Metformin should be taken exactly as directed by your doctor. Follow the dosage and time recommendations. Do not skip or change dosages without first consulting your doctor
