Uses of Mesalazine
Mesalazine is used to treat ulcerative colitis (inflammation of large intestine) and Crohn’s ileo-colitis (ulcers, abscesses and narrowing in the bowel).

How Mesalazine works
Mesalazine works by blocking the activity of cyclooxygenase (enzyme causing the release of inflammatory agents). It also inhibits the release of prostaglandin (inflammatory compound), diminishing inflammatory activity in the intestines.
Common side effects of Mesalazine
- diarrhoea, abdominal pain, vomiting, nausea
- wind in abdomen
- headache
- joint and muscular pain
- indigestion
- rectal disorder
When to consult your doctor
Consult your doctor:
- In case of accidental overdosage
- If you experience, any signs of allergic reactions (such as skin rash, swelling of the face, lips, mouth, or throat which can lead to difficulty in breathing or swallowing)
- If you experience severe chest pain with shortness of breath
- If you experience fever, sore throat, mouth/lip ulcers, spots underneath the skin (including the genital and anal regions), paleness, swelling in ankles, unusual bleeding (including unexpected nose or gum bleeds), skin rashes with flaking, boils, or sore lips/mouth
- If you experience bruising more frequently
- If you experience problems with kidney function
