Uses of Lignocaine+Prilocaine

The combination of Lignocaine + Prilocaine is used to cause temporary numbness (loss of pain sensation) of body parts. It is primarily used to abolish pain signals prior to surgical and diagnostic procedures.

Therapeutic Category

Lignocaine + Prilocaine: Topical anaesthetic agents

How Lignocaine+Prilocaine works

Lignocaine + Prilocaine is a local anesthetic medication. It blocks the flow of certain ions (sodium ions) through the nerves that causes pain sensation. Therefore, it limits the transfer of pain signals from the peripheral part of the body (i.e., face, hands, legs, abdomen, pelvis, genitals or where the medicine has been applied) to the brain which ultimately leads to loss of sensation.

Common side effects of Lignocaine+Prilocaine

  • application site reactions (such as paleness, redness, swelling, initial mild burning sensation, itching or warmth at the treated area)

When to consult your doctor

Consult your doctor if you experience:

  • signs of allergic reactions (such as skin rash, itching, swelling of the face, lips, throat, or tongue causing difficulty in breathing or swallowing, fainting)
  • signs of methemoglobinemia (such as lack of oxygen, breathlessness)
