Uses of Lacosamide

Lacosamide is used to treat seizures (fits).

Therapeutic Category

Lacosamide: Antiepileptics.

How Lacosamide works

Lacosamide works slowly by inactivating the sodium gated channels, which decreases the abnormal and excessive activity of the nerve cells in the brain and controls the number of seizures or fits you have.

Common side effects of Lacosamide

  • headache
  • nausea
  • double or blurred vision
  • myoclonic seizures (short jerks of a muscle or group of muscles)
  • difficulties in coordinating movements or walking
  • problems in keeping balance, tremors (shaking), tingling (paresthesia) or muscle spasms, falling easily and getting bruises
  • troubles with memory, confusion
  • rapid and uncontrollable movements of the eyes (nystagmus)
  • vomiting, dry mouth, constipation, indigestion, excessive gas in the stomach or bowel, diarrhea
  • reduced sensitivity or feeling, difficulty in articulating words, disturbance in attention
  • noise in the ear such as buzzing, ringing, or whistling
  • irritability, trouble sleeping, depression
  • sleepiness, tiredness, or weakness (asthenia)
  • itching, rash
  • runny nose, fever, sore throat, eating less than usual (in children)

When to consult your doctor

Consult your doctor:

  • in case of accidental overdosage
  • if you experience symptoms of abnormal heartbeat (such as rapid, irregular, or slow heartbeat, palpitations, shortness of breath, feeling lightheaded, fainting)
  • if you experience new type of seizures or worsening of existing seizure

Health Tips for Lacosamide

  • Avoid alcohol while taking Lacosamide as it can increase the risk of dizziness and drowsiness
  • Maintain regular sleep pattern as it is important for overall health and seizure management. Establish regular sleep patterns and ensure you are getting sufficient rest each night
  • Consider carrying medical identification (Ex. a bracelet or card) if you have epilepsy and are taking Lacosamide. So that it indicates your condition and the medication you are taking. This can provide vital information to the healthcare professionals in case of emergency
