Uses of Hyoscyamine
Hyoscyamine is used to treat the symptoms of functional intestinal disorders such as mild dysentery and diverticulitis (infection of the intestinal pouches). It is also used to control gastric secretion, spasms in internal organs and increased contractions and abdominal cramps associated with conditions such as cystitis (inflammation of the urinary bladder) and pylorospasm (abnormal contraction of the lower part of the stomach).
It is also used to provide symptomatic relief from biliary colic (blockade of the gall bladder duct), renal colic (pain in the kidney) and the common cold when used with appropriate analgesics. It is also used as adjunctive therapy to treat peptic ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome, acute enterocolitis (inflammation of the digestive tract) and other functional gastrointestinal disorders in affected individuals.

Hyoscyamine works by acting on the receptors that decrease acid production in the stomach and relaxes the muscles of the stomach, intestine, bladder, kidney and also slow down the movement of the digestive system. As a result, it treats the disorder of the digestive system and relieves pain involving the liver, kidney and gallbladder.
