Uses of Heparin
Heparin is used to treat blood clots in leg veins (deep vein thrombosis), blood clots in the lung (pulmonary embolism), chest pains resulting from disease of the heart arteries (unstable angina pectoris), severe blockages affecting arteries in the legs (acute peripheral arterial occlusion).
It is also used during heart, lung operations, during kidney dialysis and prevention of blood clots in the heart following a heart attack (mural thrombosis).
Therapeutic Category
Heparin: Anticoagulant
How Heparin works
Heparin binds to the antithrombin (an enzyme present in the clotting system) which in turn inhibits several clotting factors such as factor Xa, factor IIa. This inactivation of thrombin prevents the formation of clots and prolongs the clotting time of blood.
Common side effects of Heparin
- Red lumps or red, itchy patches like eczema at the injection site
When to consult your doctor
Consult your doctor, if you experience:
- Severe allergic reactions (itchy skin rash, eye irritation, runny nose, wheezing, rapid breathing, blue tinge to the lips, fever, chills, swelling of the eyes and lips, and shock)
- Thrombocytopenia may result in the formation of dangerous blood clots causing chest pains, shortness of breath, coughing, dizziness or loss of consciousness
- Signs of developing paralysis (after having an epidural or spinal anesthetic, tingling, weakness or numbness in legs or lower body, back pain, incontinence of urine or back passage)
- Unusual bruising or purple spots on skin, unusual bleeding from gums, nose, urine, stool, or injury
