Uses of Fosfomycin

Fosfomycin is used for the treatment of osteomyelitis, complicated urinary tract infections, nosocomial lower respiratory tract infections, bacterial meningitis, and bacteraemia in adults and children including neonates.  It can also be used to treat uncomplicated bladder infection in women and female adolescents as well as to prevent possible infections before surgical procedures of the prostate in adult men

How Fosfomycin works

Fosfomycin works by preventing the enzymatic synthesis of the bacterial cell wall. It exerts a bactericidal effect on the bacteria that helps to cure the infection

Common side effects of Fosfomycin

• retching
• swelling at injection site
• headache
• dizziness
• diarrhoea, indigestion
• inflammation of female genital organs like irritations and itching

• if you experience serious allergic reaction (symptoms include breathing or swallowing difficulties, sudden wheezing, dizziness, swelling of face, eyelids, lips and tongue, rash or itching)
• if you experience severe and persistent diarrhoea (may or may not be associated with abdominal pain or fever)
• if you experience jaundice (yellowish discolouration of skin or whites of eyes)
• if you experience confusion, muscle twitching or abnormal heart rhythm
• if you experience bleeding and bruising more often than usual
