Uses of Fenofibric Acid

Fenofibrate helps to reduce cholesterol (LDL; bad cholesterol) and triglycerides (fatty acids) in the blood.

Therapeutic Category

Fenofibrate: Fibrates

How Fenofibric Acid works

Fenofibrate enhances lipolysis and elimination of triglyceride-rich particles from plasma by activating lipoprotein lipase and by reducing the production of apoprotein C-III (an inhibitor of lipoprotein lipase activity).

It also activates peroxisome proliferator activated receptor alpha receptor, which generates peroxisomes filled with hydrogen peroxide, reactive oxygen species and few hydroxyl radicals that also induces lipolysis and enhance lipid metabolism.

Common side effects of Fenofibric Acid

  • diarrhea, stomach pain, wind
  • feeling sick or being sick

When to consult your doctor

Consult your doctor, if you experience:

  • Allergic reaction (such as swelling of face/lips/tongue or throat, difficulty in breathing)
  • Muscle cramps or weakness
  • Stomach pain
  • Chest pain
  • Pain, redness or swelling in leg
  • Jaundice (yellowing of skin and whites of eyes)

Health Tips for Fenofibric Acid

  • Always take Fenofibrate exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Take your medication at the same time each day. Do not alter the dosage or stop taking it without consulting your healthcare provider.
  • Adopt a heart-healthy diet that is low in saturated fats, trans fats, and cholesterol. Focus on consuming whole grains, lean proteins, fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats like those found in nuts, seeds, and fatty fish.
  • Excessive alcohol intake can raise triglyceride levels and counteract the benefits of fenofibrate. So, limit or avoid your alcohol intake.
  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay properly hydrated.
  • Attend all scheduled follow-up appointments with your healthcare provider to monitor your lipid levels and overall health.
  • Fenofibrate is not recommended for use in pregnant or planning for pregnancy or breast feeding.
