Uses of Esomeprazole+Itopride

The combination of Esomeprazole and Itopride is used in the management of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in patients who does not respond to esomeprazole alone.

How Esomeprazole+Itopride works

Esomeprazole suppresses stomach acid secretion by specific blockade of the proton pump at the secretory surface of the stomach cell and itopride that blocks certain enzyme to increase the stomach motility, lower sphincter pressure of food pipe, stomach emptying and improve the stomach-intestine coordination. This kind of action provides relief from the symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). 

Common side effects of Esomeprazole+Itopride

  • headache
  • dizziness and shaking of hands
  • diarrhoea, stomach pain, constipation, flatulence, nausea, vomiting
  • easy bruising
  • increased milk production
  • excessive development of breasts in male
  • yellowing of skin and eyes
  • skin rash, redness and itching

When to consult your doctor

Consult your doctor:

  • In case of accidental overdosage
  • If you experience low magnesium levels (signs include extreme tiredness, involuntary muscle contractions, disorientation, fits, dizziness or increased heart rate)
  • If you experience severe allergic reaction (signs include sudden wheezing, swelling of your lips, tongue and throat or body, rash, fainting or trouble swallowing)
  • If you experience steven-johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis (signs include reddening of the skin with blisters or peeling, severe blisters and bleeding in the lips, eyes, mouth, nose, genitals)
  • If you experience signs of liver problems (such as yellow skin, dark urine, or tiredness)

  • Do not drive or use any machines if you feel dizzy or your vision becomes blurred after taking Esomeprazole + Itopride
  • Esomeprazole + Itopride is not recommended for use in pregnant women unless considered clearly necessary and in breast-feeding women
  • Esomeprazole + Itopride is not recommended for use in individuals with gastrointestinal bleeding, mechanical obstruction or perforation and it should be used with caution in individuals with severe kidney and liver problems, osteoporosis (weak bones)
  • Before taking Esomeprazole + Itopride inform your doctor if you are taking or have recently taken prescription medicines, over the counter drugs (OTC), supplements including herbal products as it may interact with each other leading to potential decrease in therapeutic effectiveness or increase the risk of any unusual effects
