Uses of Diacerein

Diacerein is used for the symptomatic treatment of functional symptoms of osteoarthritis (a joint disease) by relieving inflammation.

Therapeutic Category

Diacerein: Anthraquinones

How Diacerein works

Diacerein works by blocking the chemicals (interleukin-1) causing inflammation and destruction of cartilage in the body. It also stimulates the production of certain chemicals called transforming growth factor-ß (TGF-ß) which triggers chondrocyte proliferation and stimulates the production of collagen and proteoglycan, glycosaminoglycans and hyaluronic acid. Therefore, it prevents the cartilage destruction and improves symptoms in patients with osteoarthritis (joint disease).

Common side effects of Diacerein

Health Tips for Diacerein

  • Diacerein is usually taken once a day, preferably with a meal. Taking it with food can help reduce stomach upset while availing diacerein uses
  • Drink an adequate amount of water throughout the day. Staying hydrated can help prevent constipation, which is a common side effect of diacerein
  • Maintain a balanced and healthy diet to support joint health. Include foods rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins
  • Engage in regular low-impact exercises, as recommended by your healthcare provider. Exercise can help to improve joint flexibility and strength, enhancing the effects of diacerein
  • Alcohol consumption may increase the risk of gastrointestinal side effects, so it's best to avoid alcohol while availing diacerein uses
  • If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, consult your healthcare provider before taking diacerein, as its safety during these periods is not well established
