How Deferasirox works
Deferasirox works by trapping and removing excess iron from the body which is then excreted mainly in the form of stools and reduces the risk of organ damage to the liver and heart.
Common side effects of Deferasirox
- change in kidney function tests
- nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, indigestion
- rash
- headache
- change in liver function tests
- itching
- change in urine test (protein in the urine)

- In case of accidental overdose or ingestion

- It may cause dizziness. Do not drive or operate any machines
- Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or planning for pregnancy
- During treatment your doctor will conduct blood or urine test to monitor the amount of iron in your body (blood level of ferritin) and liver or kidney function
- Your doctor may require you to undergo a kidney biopsy, if the doctor suspects significant kidney damage
