Uses of Chlorthalidone
Chlorthalidone is used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure), heart failure, edema (fluid retention) due to certain liver or kidney diseases, and diabetes insipidus.
Therapeutic Category
Chlorthalidone: Thiazide Diuretics
How Chlorthalidone works
Chlorthalidone removes extra excess fluids from the body. It acts by preventing the reabsorption of sodium and chloride in the kidneys. This relaxes blood vessels and reduces elevated blood pressure. It also improves blood flow through the blood vessels and protects the functions of heart.
On a contrary, Chlorthalidone can also control fluid loss in patients who are already experiencing loss of water and electrolytes from the body (such as in diabetes insipidus). During conditions with excessive fluid loss, preventing of sodium and chloride reabsorption in the kidneys by chlorthalidone would make the kidneys produce less urine and therefore controls fluid loss in patients with diabetes insipidus.
