Uses of Chlorpromazine

Chlorpromazine is used in the treatment of schizophrenia and other psychoses (especially paranoid), mania and hypomania, anxiety, psychomotor agitation, excitement, violent or dangerously impulsive behaviour, intractable hiccup and nausea, vomiting of terminal illness (where other medicines have failed or are not available). It is also used to treat schizophrenia and autism (in children).

How Chlorpromazine works

Chlorpromazine exerts its antipsychotic effect by blocking postsynaptic dopamine receptors in cortical and limbic areas of the brain, thereby preventing the excess of dopamine in the brain.

  • sudden appearance of sore throat, fever or other signs of infection

  • stiffness in your neck, tightness in your throat, trouble breathing or swallowing
