How Cetirizine works

Cetirizine works by inhibiting the action of a chemical called histamine in the body which are highly produced during an allergic reaction. Cetirizine reduces the increased level of histamine thus relives the unpleasant symptoms of allergies such as sneezing, itching runny nose etc.

• Somnolence (sleepiness)
• Diarrhoea, nausea, dry mouth
• Fatigue
• Pharyngitis, rhinitis (in children)
• Dizziness, headache
• Sore throat, inflammation of nasal tract

• Signs of allergic reaction (such as skin rash, itching, swelling of the face, lips, tongue and/or throat which can lead to difficulty in breathing or swallowing, sudden fall in blood pressure, feeling faint, shock)

• Drinking alcohol while taking cetirizine can increase the risk of drowsiness and impair your coordination and judgment. It is best to avoid alcohol consumption during cetirizine treatment
• Cetirizine can sometimes cause dry mouth. To alleviate this symptom, drink plenty of water throughout the day. Avoid caffeine and alcohol as they can contribute to dehydration
• Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or planning for pregnancy
