Uses of Cephalexin

Cephalexin is used to treat bacterial infections of the respiratory tract (Ex. tonsillitis, pharyngitis, and bronchitis), middle ear (otitis media), skin and soft tissues, teeth and gums, bone and joints, reproductive organs, and urinary tract (cystitis, prostatitis).

How Cephalexin works

Cephalexin is a bactericidal antibiotic. It binds to the bacterial cell wall and interfere with the bacterial cell wall synthesis. This weakens the bacterial cells and causes lysis of the bacteria, leading to bacterial cell death and decrease in spread of infection.

Common side effects of Cephalexin

  • diarrhea
  • nausea, vomiting
  • indigestion, stomach-ache
  • measles-like rash, (alone), itching, swelling and redness of skin
  • tiredness, weakness, agitation, confusion
  • headache, dizziness
  • fungal infections of oral cavity or vagina

When to consult your doctor

Consult your doctor if you experience:

  • rash with widespread joint pain and/or stiffness, swollen lymph glands, fever and, possibly, cloudy urine
  • severe diarrhoea
  • acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis (red scaly widespread rash with bumps under the skin and blisters along with fever at the beginning of the treatment)
  • fits
