Therapeutic Category
Bromocriptine: Dopamine agonists and prolactin inhibitors
How Bromocriptine works
Bromocriptine helps to correct hormonal imbalance and brain disorders by increasing the activity of a brain chemical called dopamine. It reduces the production of a hormone called prolactin which is responsible for causing increased breast milk production (galactorrhoea), infertility problems and certain non-cancerous tumours (prolactinoma). It treats acromegaly by reducing the amount of growth hormone produced in the body and reduces the symptoms of parkinsonism (rigidity, tremor, and muscle stiffness) by replacing the lost dopamine levels in the brain.
Bromocriptine also acts by altering the levels of certain brain chemicals (dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine) which are involved in digestive process. As a result, it provides better control over blood sugar levels by decreasing the metabolic activity and makes the body respond well to insulin.
