   Uses of Betahistine
Betahistine is used to treat signs of Meniere’s disease. Meniere’s disease is a disorder of the inner ear that causes episodes of dizziness, vertigo, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), nausea and problems in hearing.
Therapeutic Category
Betahistine: Antivertigo agents
How Betahistine works
Betahistine is a histamine analogue with anti-motion sickness and vasodilating properties. It reduces the unpleasant symptoms of Meniere’s disease (such as nausea, dizziness, vertigo and tinnitus) by improving the blood supply to the inner ear.
Common side effects of Betahistine
- nausea
- indigestion, bloating
- stomach pain
- headache
When to consult your doctor
Consult your doctor:
- In case of accidental overdosage
- If you experience any signs of allergic reactions (such as skin rash, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or neck, drop in blood pressure and difficulty in breathing)
Health Tips for Betahistine
- Limit or avoid substances that can cause or worsen the symptoms such as caffeine, alcohol and excessive salt consumption. Some people with Meniere’s disease find that lowering their salt diet helps to minimise fluid retention in the inner ear and lessen symptoms
- Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day. Hydration is important for maintaining fluid equilibrium in the body and may contribute to general well-being
- Maintain a regular sleep schedule and get adequate restorative sleep. Fatigue and lack of sleep can exacerbate vertigo and dizziness symptoms. Make your sleeping environment comfy and practise healthy sleep hygiene routine
- Engage in balance exercises and activities that can help you improve your balance and coordination. Physical therapy or particular exercises advised by a healthcare expert may be beneficial in treating symptoms and improving general stability
- Be vigilant and take the necessary precautions to avoid falls or accidents. If you have vertigo or dizziness, take your time changing positions, utilise handrails or other support as needed, and be aware of any hazards in your surroundings
