How Axitinib works

Axitinib works by reducing the blood supply to the tumour and slowing down the growth of cancer.

Common side effects of Axitinib

  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach ache, indigestion, constipation
  • Soreness of the mouth, tongue, or throat
  • Shortness of breath, cough, hoarseness
  • Lack of energy, weakness, or tiredness
  • Skin rash, dryness of the skin, redness, and swelling of the palms of the hands or soles of the feet
  • Joint pain, pain in hands or feet
  • Loss of appetite
  • Weight loss
  • Headache
  • Loss of taste

When to consult your doctor

Consult your doctor if you experience:

  • Signs and symptoms of heart failure, such as excessive tiredness, swelling of the abdomen, legs, or ankles, shortness of breath, or protruding neck veins
  • Signs and symptoms of blood clots in your veins and arteries, including stroke, heart attack, embolism, or thrombosis such as chest pain or pressure; pain in your arms, back, neck, or jaw; shortness of breath; numbness or weakness on one side of your body; trouble talking; headache; vision changes or dizziness
  • Symptoms of bleeding, such as black tarry stools, coughing up blood or bloody sputum, or a change in your mental status
  • Symptoms of a hole in the stomach or intestine or the formation of a fistula include severe abdominal pain
  • Symptoms of a severe increase in blood pressure (hypertensive crisis), such as a severe headache or severe chest pain
  • Symptoms of reversible swelling of the brain such as headache, confusion, fits, or changes in vision with or without high blood pressure

Health Tips for Axitinib

  • Do not take Axitinib with grapefruit or grapefruit juice, as it may increase the chance of side effects
  • Do not drive or operate any machinery if you feel dizziness and/or fatigue while taking Axitinib
  • Drink an adequate amount of water during treatment with Axitinib, as it can cause diarrhea, which may lead to dehydration
  • Axitinib is not recommended for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Effective contraception is necessary during Axitinib treatment to avoid potential harm to an unborn baby
  • Avoid alcohol consumption while taking Axitinib, as it can increase the risk of side effects such as dizziness or drowsiness
  • Eat a well-balanced diet to support your overall health during treatment
