Uses of Alfuzosin+Dutasteride

The combination of Alfuzosin and Dutasteride is indicated for the management of signs and symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in adult men with an enlarged prostate.

Therapeutic Category

Alfuzosin      : Alpha-1 adrenergic blockers

Dutasteride: 5-Alpha reductase inhibitors

How Alfuzosin+Dutasteride works

Alfuzosin + Dutasteride effectively reduces the symptoms of BPH, where dutasteride acts by inhibiting the activity of an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase, which is responsible for the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (a stress hormone that causes BPH) and alfuzosin acts by relaxing the muscles surrounding the bladder and prostate by inhibiting the alpha-1 adrenergic receptors of the lower urinary tract. As a result, it helps in shrinkage of an enlarged prostate, making it easier for the urine to pass through and provide relief from symptomatic BPH.

Common side effects of Alfuzosin+Dutasteride

  • dizziness or fainting
  • headache, nausea, stomach pain
  • general weakness or tiredness
  • sexual impotence (unable to achieve or maintain an erection), decreased sex drive and difficulty with ejaculation
  • gynecomastia (breast enlargement or tenderness in men)

When to consult your doctor

Consult your doctor:
  • In case of accidental overdosage
  • If you experience priapism (persistent painful penile erection unrelated to sexual activity)
  • If you experience chest pain
  • If you experience severe allergic reactions (such as skin rash with redness and lumps, swelling of face, eyelids, lips, mouth and tongue causing difficulty in breathing or swallowing)

Health Tips for Alfuzosin+Dutasteride

  • Take Alfuzosin + Dutasteride exactly as directed by your doctor. Follow the specified dosage and regimen. Do not change the dosage or discontinue the medicine without first consulting your doctor
  • Do not drive or operate any heavy tools or machines if you experience dizziness, drowsiness, sleepiness, weakness or headache after taking Alfuzosin + Dutasteride
  • Avoid consumption of alcohol while taking Alfuzosin + Dutasteride, as it could make you feel dizzier or weaker
  • While these medications can help manage BPH symptoms, they work best when combined with a healthy lifestyle. Consider dietary changes, such as reducing caffeine and alcohol intake, and engage in regular exercise to help manage your prostate health
  • It is not recommended for use in patients with moderate to severe liver impairment and prostate cancer
  • Before taking Alfuzosin + Dutasteride inform your doctor if you are taking or have recently taken prescription medicines, over the counter drugs (OTC), supplements including herbal products as it may interact with each other leading to potential decrease in therapeutic effectiveness or increase the risk of any unusual effects
