Acetyl Cysteine: Mucolytics, Antidotes
How Acetyl Cysteine works
Acetyl Cysteine works by enhancing airway secretions and mucociliary function (a defense mechanism of the lungs that promotes movement and removal of excess mucus), which causes the mucus (phlegm) to become less sticky, resulting in its easy removal through cough, thus helping in clearing the airway due to thick mucus and treating airway diseases.
In cases of paracetamol poisoning, acetyl cysteine works by restoring glutathione (an antioxidant that removes toxic substances from the body), which helps in neutralizing the free harmful radicals due to paracetamol overdose in the body, thus preventing liver damage due to paracetamol overdose in affected individuals.
Common side effects of Acetyl Cysteine
- nausea
- vomiting
