 Uses of Acetazolamide
Acetazolamide is used in the treatment of glaucoma, abnormal fluid retention in the body and epilepsy (fits).
Therapeutic Category
Acetazolamide: Anticonvulsant, Antiglaucoma (Carbonic Anhydrase Inhibitor)
How Acetazolamide works
Acetazolamide effectively treats glaucoma by blocking an enzyme called carbonic anhydrase which reduces the production of aqueous humor (fluid in the eye) and lowers the intraocular (eye) pressure. It controls epilepsy (fits) by directly blocking an enzyme in the central nervous system hence, increasing the oxygen level of the body. [GBNKEYWORD] also acts on certain parts of kidneys which increases the excretion of certain substances through urine which helps in release of retained fluid in the body, hence, relieves fluid retention.
